Students who live at home are encouraged to subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) through either a cable modem or DSL broadband high-speed connection. Use of a broadband ISP along with NJIT’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides high-speed access to most of the campus-based proprietary information services. You can access NJIT network services just as if you were on campus in the library, a computer lab, or residence hall room.

We recommend using the fast, stable wired connection in the residence halls. All of the residence halls and the University Apartments (except the Haseldorf Apartments) are wired for networking. This means that each room is equipped with a high-speed network connection outlet, one port per person. You will need two items in order to do this: (A) a 10/100 Base-T network card (this is not a modem) and (B) a Cat-5 “twisted pair” network cable (this is not a phone cord).

Each residence hall has card swipe access for outside doors, laundry facilities, public call boxes, a lounge with television, expanded basic cable, kitchen, recycling and a variety of other community facilities. Each room is furnished with a standard size twin bed, closet space, dresser, desk and desk chair for each student. All rooms are connected to cable TV, internet (T-1 connection) and telephone service.

To connect to ResNet you must have a Pentium running Windows XP or higher, or a Macintosh running OS X or higher. In addition, your computer must have a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet network card. Most college health clinics are not open 24 hours per day, and many times an illness does not warrant a trip in for simple things such as headaches, cramps, or a mild cold. Beginning in the Fall of 2005, Information Services has implemented Network Authentication in the Residence Halls. This is a different system than Computer Registration. The residence hall rooms are equipped with towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, beds, closets, drawers, desks, a phone and a phone line. Refrigerators may be rented for your entire stay. You will need to bring your own personal belongings and toiletries.

The right to privacy and campus security are held in high regard at West Virginia University. A computer room is not provided in the residence hall; however each room has Ethernet connections for personal computers. A computer lounge is located in the Carpenter/Wells complex.

Guests are permitted in the residence halls only at the request of residents, who then become responsible for their visitors' conduct. All guests must be signed in by their host and abide by College and hall regulations applicable to the resident host. Guests of the same gender as the resident host may stay overnight in student rooms provided that each resident of the room to be used gives her permission and the Residence Coordinator is notified.

The residence halls on campus are designated as nonsmoking.However, residents may smoke at the designated smoking locations outside each building. Smoking is not allowed in public areas across the Columbia College campus.

The residence halls open for first-year students on August 23, 2007 at 12:00 PM. Check-in time for the first-year students will be between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. In order to check-in to the residence halls, all residents MUST be cleared through Student Business Services, Admissions, financial Assistance and Planning, Registrar, Health Services and Athletics (if applicable). Students will not be permitted to check into the residence hall if they are not cleared.

You will find your DCI computer in your room, in its original box, with all the necessary cabling and software. The system will be ready to use once you open the box and make a few simple connections. Each system includes a "Getting Started Guide" and a printer connection guide to assist you in getting set up. There may be security related updates that must be installed before connecting to the network.

Information will be sent to you in advance of the start of each semester for which you have a room assignment.

You can get a medical single in the Residence Halls if you use a wheelchair, a service or guide dog or need privacy due to certain medical or psychiatric conditions. If you are interested in this accommodation you should consult either the Director of the Disability Resource Center or the Director of the Health Services to determine your eligibility. All other disabilities, including those with learning disabilities or ADD, can apply for singles or superior occupancy but will have to pay extra.

For safety reasons, there are some items that are not allowed in the residence halls. These include halogen lamps, incense or anything with an open flame. Candles, even for decorative purposes, are not allowed. Fireworks; weapons including paint ball guns, knives and martial arts weapons; and combustible liquids are also not allowed. Items with exposed heating elements such as coffee makers, toasters and George Foreman-style grills may not be used in the residence hall room.

Residence hall rooms are furnished with beds and mattresses (36" x 80"), mattress pad, draperies, desks and desk chairs, drawer and closet space, study lamps, wastebaskets, compact refrigerator and telephone with voice mail. Students may bring their own microwave oven (1000 watts maximum) and coffee maker. Rooms are not carpeted.
