The amount of memory rdiff-backup uses should not depend much on the size of directories being processed. Keeping track of hard links may use up memory, so if you have, say, hundreds of thousands of files hard linked together, rdiff-backup may need tens of MB. If rdiff-backup seems to be leaking memory, it is probably because it is using an early version of librsync. librsync 0.9.5 leaks lots of memory. Later versions should not leak and are available from the librsync homepage.

In general, rdiff-backup does not strive to make newer clients compatible with older servers (or vice versa). However, there is no intention to purposefully make different versions incompatible across the network -- changes are introduced primarily to fix bugs or introduce new features that cannot be implemented without breaking the network protocol. Furthermore, rdiff-backup does try to make it possible to read older archives.

rdiff-backup can be limited by the CPU, disk IO, or available bandwidth, and the length of a session can be affected by the amount of data, how much the data changed, and how many files are present. That said, in the typical case the number/size of changed files is relatively small compared to that of unchanged files, and rdiff-backup is often either CPU or bandwidth bound, and takes time proportional to the total number of files.

This document tries to answer questions asked frequently on the mailing list or other questions that people might have when starting out with or evaluating Bricolage. Currently only PostgreSQL support is maintained. There is an Oracle driver, but it's old and not known to work. A port to MySQL 4.1 is reportedly underway.

Windows will, by design, always attempt to find some use, anything whatever that might potentially be of some benefit, for every bit of RAM installed in the computer. In most cases the cause of an apparent memory leak is an OpenSSL internal table that is allocated when an application starts up. Since such tables do not grow in size over time they are harmless. The simple answer is, it doesn't! There are some GTK+ pixmap based themes around that leak a lot of memory. Please try using a different theme and see if that resolves the problem. X-Chat itself only allocates about 40kb of memory through malloc()!

If you need to check mem-leak in executables or source code written by third party, it is better to use a good tool. Do a google search... However, if you are coding in Lisp/Basic/Java/C#/..., you don't need to worry about these problems, since those languages are using garbage collectors.
