In many areas of Africa , the land has been seriously depleted by erosion of the topsoil due to deforestation and desertification. In the rainy season there is nothing to anchor the soil and deep gullies are carved out by heavy rain. Part of the process of land improvement is the construction of retaining banks in order to contain the run-off of this rainwater and halt the erosion. This is called terracing or contouring.

Another very common question concerns the Toxicity of Plants. This is a good general guideline on the topic. You may not want to bother removing the flower-bearing stems on many types of salvia that are grown for hummingbirds. These stems simply dry up by themselves and since our annual salvias generally do not produce seeds in great number; this need not be a concern for you. Salvia coccinea does produce seeds on these stems.

A growing area classification must be completed before shellfish may be harvested for sale. There are many ways to lower your daily use of water, from devices installed on fixtures within your house to changing some everyday habits. The MWRA offers many useful tips. Some quick examples are: Faucets - You can obtain different low flow fixtures for your home to lower the use of water in your shower head and other faucets. Toilets - You can use dye tablets in your toilet tank to check for leaks. You can avoid use the toilet as a wastebasket to limit flushing.
