In all probability, the letter F in front of a shelfmark (of materials classified under the Dewey Decimal classification scheme) will indicate a Folio-sized item which is larger than average and which, because of its size, will not fit into the shelf among the other material with the same shelfmark. In the Main Library, this larger sized material is shelved in separate sequences near (usually just before) the books on the same subject. The F .

The Library of Congress does not use the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) to organize any part of its own collections. Rather the Dewey program maintained at the Library serves an outreach function to the Library's national and international constituencies. The Dewey Decimal Classification is the most widely used library classification in the world, and the Decimal Classification Division's mission is, on behalf of library users everywhere, to develop, apply, and assist in the use of the DDC.

The term means litigation that according to generally accepted accounting principles, is significant to an applicant’s or a licensee’s financial health and must be disclosed in the applicant’s or licensee’s audited financial statements, reports to shareholders, or similar records.

In our Library of Congress scheme, larger-sized material (Folio-size) is designated as Folio. Items labelled Folio. and Pamph. are located on the 4th Floor at the start of the material shelved under the Library of Congress sheme. The Fine Arts section ("N" in the LoC classification) is the only one where Books and Folios are integrated This is because the bulk of the material is Folio-sized anyway.

Dewey numbers are not shown in the Brief Record display which is the first screen to appear for a single catalog record. However, they are available in the Online Catalog. The Dewey number is displayed in either the Full Record or MARC Tags displays, accessed by clicking on the tabs at the top of the Brief Record display. You can search the new catalog by Dewey number using Keyword, Guided Keyword with Keyword Anywhere selected, or the Command Keyword search using the index code K082.

A shelfmark is the block of numbers and letters that appears on the spine of a book. All items in the library are allocated a shelfmark and then shelved in numerical order. C.A.S stands for Centre of African Studies Collection. This material is located in the Main Library on the north side of the 3rd Floor (the side facing the gardens in George Square). The material is shelved alphabetically in country order with shelfmarks similar to these: CAS.ALG.MIN., CAS.BUR.ENG., CAS.CHA.BUI., CAS.EGY.MIN. etc. The ALG, BUR, CHA, and EGY components of the shelfmarks shown above refer to Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Egypt.

Homogenous material is defined as material that cannot be "mechanically disjointed" into different materials. "Mechanically disjointed" means that the materials cannot in principal be separated into other materials by mechanical methods such as unscrewing, cutting, crushing, grinding or abrasive processes. A clean separation is not a requirement and this definition is intended only to indicate that materials such as plastics, metals, and coatings, etc.

There are ten main categories in DDC. These are divided into ten subcategories, which in turn are divided into further subcategories. The more specific the subject of the item is, the longer the number assigned to it. The DDC is published by Forest Press, which became a division of OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. in 1988, http://www.oclc.org/oclc/fp/index.htm.

In Universal Decimal Classification, UDC, "knowledge is divided into ten classes, then each class is subdivided into its logical parts, each subdivision is further subdivided, and so on....the universe of information (all recorded knowledge) is treated as a coherent system, built of related parts." The term “historical” as used in the GNIS means specifically and only that the feature no longer exists on the landscape. It has no reference to age, size, condition, extent of habitation, type of use, or any other factor. For example, a ghost town is not historical, only abandoned as might be noted in the historical notes field.

National Trust classification means the place has been recognized for its cultural heritage significance, and efforts should be undertaken to conserve this for future generations. If a classified place becomes threatened, the National Trust will take action to preserve it through advocacy and campaigns.

Items are catalogued and classified by topic and then within a topic and given a unique number. This enables you to find materials easily anywhere in the collection. For example, the book Equine Photographs and Drawings for Conformation and Anatomy is assigned call number 636.1 Eq57, which falls under the heading Applied Sciences/Agriculture.

All the basic level worksheets here begin with positive integer values, that is, positive whole numbers, and zero. Decimal values in the advanced addition, subtraction, and multiplication worksheets include 2 digits to the right of the decimal place. In the division worksheets, decimal is used to indicate problems that do not have whole number answers -- they can be used to practice calculations where "remainders" occur, or for the calculation of decimal answers.
