This procedure uses a laser beam to destroy new blood vessels. The patient sits at a slit lamp (a machine similar to the kind used to examine the eye), and a contact lens is placed on the eye's surface. A laser beam is then focused on the new blood vessel and it is cauterized. Because the new blood vessel is deep in the retinal tissue and the laser has to move through the overlying retina to reach it, some of the retinal tissue will be damaged by this procedure.

It depends on what type of surgery is done and what your individual physician feels is necessary. In general, cervical instrumentation is very rigid in fixing the spine. Most surgeons would add a collar just to protect the fusion site, even with metal, for the early period after the surgery. These collars are generally a combination of a soft inner lining and a more stiff plastic outer shell.

Even though an implant has been placed in the eye, eyeglasses are usually needed to help refine your vision and make it clear. The eyeglasses you may need may have thin lenses and will not be like the thick "coke bottle" glasses which people used to wear years ago when implants were not used. If you wear eyeglasses now, you will probably need to change the lens over the operated eye a few weeks after surgery.

Recommendations for postoperative bracing depend on multiple factors such as, the spinal disorder being treated, bone quality, and type of operation performed. Most decompressive procedures, such as discectomy, do not require bracing. Spinal instrumentation has dramatically reduced the need for prolonged bracing after fusion operations. The titanium implants provide an internal splint that supports the spine as the body establishes the spinal fusion.

This type of surgery is performed in an eye doctor's office or a clinic. Before the procedure, eye drops are instilled to freeze the eye. A small contact lens is placed on the eye to help focus the laser energy. The laser energy is delivered in a series of applications that appear as very bright lights to the patient. The procedure is generally painless. Afterwards, patients are free to go home and resume their regular activities.

Thermal laser surgery causes a permanent scar on the retina. Following this treatment, all patients are left with a permanent blind spot. Laser surgery can reduce vision in some cases. Additionally, the risk of developing a recurrent blood vessel is high following laser surgery, and repeated applications of the laser may be necessary.

Whatever you wore before surgery, you can wear afterward with very few exceptions. Many pouching systems are made today that are unnoticeable even when wearing the most stylish, form fitting clothing for men and women. Depending on your stoma location you might find belts uncomfortable or restrictive. Some people choose to wear higher or looser waistbands on trousers and skirts. Cotton knit or stretch underpants or panty hose may give the support and security you need.

You can shower on POD 1, and you should replace the dressing only as needed, with gauze dressing or band-aids.

The first few days you will be feeling tired and you can expect to have pain. Make sure you have your prescription for pain medication before you leave the hospital. Everyone has a different tolerance for pain. You will generally need to take the pain medication more regularly for the first few days postoperatively. Walking is good for you and should be done each day to increase your strength and help your bowels return to regular function.

Insurance companies are no longer covering stays in rehabilitation facilities after joint replacement. We will ensure that you are fully weight bearing the night of surgery and are able to do stairs prior to discharge, then for 2-5 days following discharge a physical therapist will come to your home to work with you, and finally you will attend outpatient therapy for 2 to 4 weeks at a physical therapy close to your home.

I will give you specific exercises to do following surgery. I will not want you running or jumping until you are fully recovered.

The recovery phase begins soon after surgery. Most patients are sitting in a chair or standing with assistance the second day after surgery. Early mobilization reduces the risks of blood clots, pneumonia, and deconditioning. A physical therapist plays a critical role during the early postoperative period. They work closely with the patients and assist with the rehabilitation. By the third day, many patients are standing or walking under the supervision of the therapists and nurses.

Your dentist will provide instructions about how long dentures or partials should be kept in place. During the first few days, you may be advised to wear them most of the time, including while you sleep. While you may be advised to wear your denture almost constantly during the first two weeks, even while you sleep, under normal circumstances it is considered best to remove it at night. Research has shown that removing the denture for at least eight hours during either the day or night allows the gum tissue to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. This promotes better long-term health of the gums.

Denture patients have usually lost most or all of their natural teeth. Dr. Wooten will usually recommend full or complete dentures for patients who have no natural teeth remaining, and partial dentures for patients who have some natural teeth left. .

Dr. Wooten will make an impression of your mouth to get exact dimensions. Next, Dr. Wooten will use wax to give your face the proper support and appearance. Then he will test a mock-up of your denture to be certain everything is perfect. After that the denture will be processed for final placement.

Handling a denture requires care. It's a good idea to stand over a folded towel or a sink of water just in case you accidentally drop the denture. Brush the denture each day to remove food deposits and plaque. Brushing your denture helps prevent the appliance from becoming permanently stained. It's best to use a brush that is designed for cleaning dentures. A denture brush has bristles that are arranged to fit the shape of the denture. A regular, soft-bristled toothbrush is also acceptable.

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position. Complete dentures are either "conventional" or "immediate.

Replacing missing teeth should make eating a more pleasant experience. Eating will however, take a little practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth at the same time to keep even pressure on the partial or prevent the dentures from tipping. As you become accustomed to chewing, add other foods until you return to your normal diet. Continue to chew food using both sides of the mouth at the same time.

Not necessarily. There are three options for eliminating bowel waste after removal of the colon. One is the standard ostomy, and use of ostomy appliances. Another is a so-called continent ostomy, which is emptied through a rigid tube you insert through the valve-like ostomy opening. The third is the ileo-anal pull-through, where the ileum is attached to the rectal wall, and you eliminate through the anus.
