The first thing we suggest about bringing another cat into your house is that you have it feline leukemia tested before introducing him to your existing cat(s). When you are sure your new cat has tested negative for feline leukemia, shut him in an extra room along with his litter, food and water for at least a week or two. (This room will become a "safe spot" for your new cat. Anytime he gets spooked in the future, he'll return to this room for comfort).

There are two philosophies on this point: take it slow and easy or let them duke it out. Personally I have always followed the let them duke it out plan. This consists of letting the new cat go in the house immediately and letting the pertinent parties settle their new heirarchy on their own terms. There may be some minor battles, but unless the cats are actually causing bodily harm to one another, then they can be allowed to work it out. I have never (knock on wood) had cats get that violent.

Start the introduction before you bring the baby home from the hospital. Bring home blankets that your baby has slept in. Wear lotion on your hands that you will use for your baby. Remember, scent is extremely important to cats. You can also tape record your baby crying and play it in your house. When you bring your baby home, let your cat smell him or her. Make sure you praise your cat with treats and lots of attention.

In general, it is best to introduce a new cat slowly and indirectly. This is best accomplished by putting the new cat immediately into a separate room with its own litter pan, food, water and scratching item (e.g. a Turboscratcher). Place the dishes near the door on either side so the cats will come close to the door and get each other's scent. Keep the cats separate for at least 48 hours. After the first day, rub each cat with a towel and place it in the other cat's area to increase the scent.

You may need to introduce a cat to other animals (but first make sure the new kitten or cat has been seen by a vet to reduce the risk of transmitting illnesses or parasites to your other animals). The key to this is patience. It may take several weeks to a month to achieve desired results; it may take overnight. Do not give up and don't lose your temper. As for introducing them - it so much depends on the individual dog and their temperament - the best advice I can give is to have someone holding firmly to the dog who should be on a collar and lead and if you have one - muzzled, until you know how it will behave with your pig.

It is best to hold a cat or kitten by putting one hand under his chest and supporting the rest of his weight with your other hand. Kittens, in particular, must be handled gently as their bones are fragile. Contrary to popular belief, picking up a feline by the scruff of the neck can be painful.

When giving a cat liquid medicine, the easiest method is to use a syringe. Fill the syringe with the recommended dosage, then hold the cat's head gently but firmly and insert the syringe in the side of the cat's mouth. Squirt the medicine slowly into the cat's mouth so the cat does not choke. Once the medicine has been administered, hold the cat's mouth closed. To give a cat a pill, hold the cat's head firmly from above with your forefinger and thumb at the corners of the cat's mouth.
