The Ronald McDonald Family Room is a comfortable rest area for families at the IWK Health Centre. It is more than just a room - it has a large living room, kitchen/dining area, an art room, and four bedrooms - almost like a mini Ronald McDonald House. And, just like Ronald McDonald House, the Family Room will be staffed -- a full-time coordinator and volunteers will provide support and security.

Ronald McDonald House and the IWK Health Centre have partnered on this project because in talking with families we know they need a place to relax and rejuvenate as they meet the challenges of caring for their loved ones in a hospital environment. At the same time, many families want to stay close to their loved ones in the Health Centre. The Ronald McDonald Family Room gives families an opportunity to do both.

The Family Room is a partnership between Ronald McDonald House Atlantic Canada and the IWK Health Centre, however, it is managed by Ronald McDonald House Atlantic Canada. The two partners will continue to dialogue long after the doors of the Family Room open, to ensure the Family Room delivers on its mandate to help families at the Health Centre.

The Family Room hours will be 9:00 am - 9:00 pm. At 9:00 pm when staff and volunteers leave, the Family Room will be locked. Families in the sleeping rooms will have access to the Health Centre, but will not have access to the common areas of the Family Room.

Answer: The Arc's goal is to provide a single room for every individual. Currently we have 66 single rooms. By the end of 2004, we will have 74 single rooms and 25 double rooms. Shared rooms are often a personal choice on the part of the individuals.

Yes. Absolutely. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of our surgeries are performed at our Center's own Same-Day Surgery facility located on the lower level of Montclair Breast Center. Our patients have the luxury and convenience of using our fully accredited ambulatory surgery center. But these are not the only advantages. Our breast imagers and surgeons are always available to speak with you and your family after surgery because the offices are in the same building.

The Studio and En Suite Single room can sleep a limited combination of adults and a child, with a minimum of one adult and a maximum of two people in a room. Please note that when two adults are using the beds in either the Studio or En Suite Single Room there is no room for a cot for a child. For your comfort the beds are fitted with Comfort mattresses, and the Studio has bedside reading lights.

No. During your treatment, we prefer that they wait in the waiting room. There are other patients in the office, and we want to give everyone as much privacy as possible.

Every effort will be made to honour requests for one family member or support person to stay overnight with their loved one, provided it is deemed to be in the best interests of the patient. Family members who wish to stay overnight should advise a member of the health care team as early in the day as possible.

Particularly during the busy summer months, we often have more "room requests" for a given day than we have rooms available. When this happens, the Family Coordinator and the House Manager together use a diagnosis-based priority structure to decide which families will get the rooms. In other words, a family whose child is having a heart transplant will get the room before a family whose child is in for a regular check-up.

Families volunteering together are always located at the same Home-Base. However, since the Home-Base in each of our program sites is unique, it may not be possible for family members to have their own room together; room assignments are typically separated by gender.

Yes. Upon proper completion of the Institute registration, the Compact will notify the hotel that you will be rooming with a family member. Any participant whose Institute charges are covered by the Compact or other alliances (scholars, faculty, VIP guests, senior scholars, graduate scholars) will be responsible for paying one half of the room upon check out. The Compact will cover one half of a hotel room per eligible participant. The Compact will not be responsible for these charges.
