Diabetes in the father does not affect the developing baby during pregnancy. However, depending on the type of diabetes the father has, the baby might have a greater chance of developing diabetes later in life.

This is not so straightforward a question as it sounds. The answer would be easy if we had no control over our destiny, BUT we do know from recent research that if we make appropriate changes in our lives (that's high falutin' talk for saying if we eat properly, exercise regularly and achieve/maintain a proper weight) we CAN greatly improve our chances of not getting diabetes-at least of the type 2 variety. For the sake of simplicity, I have drafted a table which can serve as a rough guide.

In most people cases stress can make the blood sugar go up. It may be a physical stress such as an infection or an emotional stress such as a fight with a coworker or being stuck in traffic. Therefore, managing stress is an important part of diabetes control.

Women with a high waist-hip ratio had greater trouble conceiving -- so being shaped like an apple is not as good for conception as being shaped like a pear. PCO women may be more likely to have the apple shape.

Exercise helps your muscles increase their ability to transport glucose and to become more sensitive to the insulin in your body.

Weight loss helps people with diabetes in two important ways. First, it lowers insulin resistance. This allows your natural insulin (in people with type 2 diabetes) to do a better job lowering blood glucose levels. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, losing weight may allow you to quit taking it. Second, it improves blood fat and blood pressure levels. People with diabetes are about twice as likely to get cardiovascular disease as most people.

Salt has no calories. But if you take in a good amount of salt, you will gain weight temporarily. Also low consumption of salt can result in weight loss as it causes the body to expel water. There are many diet programs, which do not allow salt in their diet plans. So there is a temporary weight loss. But as soon as you complete the program and start eating salt contents, you start gaining weight. So it has very little to do with long-term weight loss. But salt does affect blood pressure.

Uncontrolled gestational diabetes also puts you at greater risk for a disorder called preeclampsia, or high blood pressure during pregnancy. This can cause problems for both you and your baby.

The good news is your gestational diabetes will probably go away after your baby is born. However, you will be more likely to get type 2 diabetes later in your life.
