Located in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program researches ways that information and communications technologies can improve surface transportation safety and mobility and contribute to America’s economic growth. ITS applications focus on both the infrastructure and vehicle as well as integrated applications between the two.

COBRA continuation coverage laws are administered by several agencies. The Departments of Labor and Treasury have jurisdiction over private-sector health group health plans. The Department of Health and Human Services administers the continuation coverage law as it affects public-sector health plans. The Labor Department's interpretive and regulatory responsibility is limited to the disclosure and notification requirements of COBRA.

The FCC is a U.S. government agency "charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable," according to its website. The Communications Act of 1934, which established the FCC, also contains sponsorship identification rules for broadcasters (see below).

The federal government has a key role to play to level the playing field across provinces and territories, ensure that programs of national interest are preserved and priorities are addressed. That is why the transfer of revenues from the federal government to provinces and territories is important. The federal transfer system can be used to bring about greater fiscal balance in the federation.

The Federal Reserve provides services to help the nation's payment system run efficiently. Through the Federal Reserve banks' cash services operations, the Federal Reserve distributes currency and coin to financial institutions. The Fed's retail banking services consist primarily of check clearing operations and electronic banking services.

The federal government has focused primarily on its constitutional responsibility for fisheries and navigation, and for waters that lie on or across international borders. In recent years, however, the federal government has assumed a greater role in relation to water quality, particularly with respect to toxic substances.

Crime has long been considered the concern of state government. States are authorized to protect their citizens from criminal activity by prosecuting criminals. States are also authorized to determine what constitutes a crime statutorily (through the legislature) and through common law. The federal government, on the other hand, has limited jurisdiction and must link any crimes it prosecutes to its powers under the Constitution.

The MPA Federal Advisory Committee is charged by the Executive Order with providing advice to the Departments of Commerce and the Interior concerning implementation of Section 4 of the Executive Order. This includes development of a national system of MPAs (a network of federal, state, territorial, and tribal sites), and the provision of information, tools, science, and strategies to strengthen the stewardship of the nation’s marine protected areas.

In Canada, a Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water, (see link below), develops and recommends national drinking water guidelines. It includes representatives of federal, provincial and territorial departments of health and the environment. It reviews toxicological and epidemiological evidence, and then makes recommendations on adding new substances to the guidelines or revising old guidelines.

The IRS has strict guidelines for depreciation. The IRS wants to minimize your tax deductible expenses, i.e., depreciation. In an operating lease, the payments are tax deductible provided the lease qualifies under FASB 13. So, leasing allows you to "compress" or "accelerate" depreciation into the term (length) of the lease. In a finance lease, the IRS sets the "depreciation" at 5 years. This permits 70% of the cost to be depreciated in 36 months.

Although Indian Tribes are self-governing, they are regulated by the Federal government. Indeed, the Federal government has plenary authority to regulate Indian matters. In general, Federal legislation will apply to Indians and Indian country unless the statute provides otherwise. Such Federal legislation affects numerous areas, including land use, environmental protection, and labor relations, to name just a few.

Federal government documents describe the shared roles in First Nations' drinking water provisions as follows: Programs and services for the provision of potable water on reserves are provided through First Nations Band Councils, Health Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

The federal government is a major player in Colorado water management for several reasons. Much of the land in Colorado is federal public land, including most mountainous regions where major rivers originate and where many water projects, both federal and non-federal, are located. Additionally, federal law is particularly important in the areas of water quality management and endangered species protection.

The National Center for State Courts, under contract with Administrative Office of the United States Courts, develops and administers the federal Spanish/English interpreter certification examination. The examination consists of two separately administered parts: a written bilingual proficiency examination, and a practical, oral examination of court interpreting skills.

Federal observers are authorized by Section 8 of the Voting Rights Act to attend and observe voting and vote-counting procedures during elections. They are non-lawyers, hired and supervised by the federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM). They are trained by OPM and by the Justice Department to watch, listen, and take careful notes of everything that happens inside the polling place during an election, and are also trained not to interfere with the election in any way.

Interpreters are not to express opinions or answer questions, so please do not try to include the interpreter in the conversation.
