Fine, then. Can I run A/UX on an emulator?
Frequently Asked Questions | ApplefritterIf anyone ever writes a cycle-accurate emulator which *exactly* duplicates the hardware in a supported Macintosh model, then yes. However, all the currently available Mac emulators, including BasiliskII, Fusion, and Softmac, don't emulate a complete set of Macintosh hardware. Instead, they take advantage of the ROMcentric nature of MacOS and simply patch the Toolbox ROM to 'fake' most hardware devices.

Related QuestionsCan A/UX 3.x.x run System 7.1?
A/UX FAQ, updated for 21st centuryA/UX 3.x.x's MacOS interface is based on System 7.0.1. You cannot install Sys 7.1 on A/UX (meaning you can't make A/UX run Sys 7.1) since there are a few system files that are fine-tuned and modified to work under A/UX. These would get overwritten if you tried to install 7.1 and you'd be out of luck. Please recall that this doesn't mean that you can't have 7.1 installed on your MacPartition, to be used when in MacOS-only mode. It just means that you can't have A/UX run 7.1.

Related QuestionsMy MacOS partition mounts fine under MacOS but it doesn't show up under A/UX... Why?
A/UX FAQ, updated for 21st centuryWhether or not a Mac partition mounts under A/UX depends on a number of factors... Necessary conditions for a partition to mount are: The disk must be partitioned using the "new" partitioning scheme detailed in Inside Macintosh V. There is still plenty of disk software out there that uses the "old" scheme and this drives will not mount under A/UX. Generic disk formatters that use the "new" scheme include SilverLining and FWB Hard Disk Toolkit.
Related QuestionsI have an EtherNet card that works fine under the Macintosh OS but not under A/UX. Why?
A/UX FAQ, updated for 21st centuryThe reason is because to access the card (which is seen as a device by A/UX), you need an A/UX device driver for it. This is not the same as the stuff you had to install under the MacOS for it to work. Now A/UX includes drivers for the Apple EtherNet card (they aren't installed by default though), but they don't work with most of the 3rd party cards except for the 3Com "EtherLink NB", the Asante "MacCon" and the StarNet Networking cards.

Related QuestionsWill Linux/mac68k be able to run MacOS or A/UX binaries?
Linux/m68k for Macintosh - The Linux/m68k for Macintosh FAQNot right now, definitely not. It has been discussed that in the future, we'll probably be able to make a Mac-in-a-Mac using some features of the 68030+ processor to allow running of the MacOS as if the machine was a 68020 (since the 68k architecture is virtualizable, unlike i386). Honestly, it's more important to get as many systems as we can running Linux right now than to get them running MacOS. If you want the MacOS that bad, what are you doing here? :) A/UX is uncertain.

Related QuestionsI don't have access to a supported machine. Can I run A/UX in emulation?
A/UX FAQ, updated for 21st centuryalluded to above, A/UX talks directly to the hardware. It does not talk to the Macintosh ROM, which is a key component that most Mac emulators use to avoid having to write full emulation of all the hardware components themselves. If someone were to write a 100% cycle-accurate emulator that precisely duplicated the hardware of a supported model, then it would be possible. However, all existing Mac emulators have taken the easy route and used the ROM as an abstraction layer to the real hardware.
