Frequently Asked Questions

It's been dry and I don't see any fire ants. Are they still around? Why should I treat them now?

Texas Imported Fire Ant Research and Management Project
The ants are still there, just not making mounds because of the heat and drought. They are deep in the ground during the day and come out to forage at night. Ants are often more of an indoor problem now, as they come in after food and water. Treating now can be very effective since the ants are weakened anyway. Using individual mound treatments during hot, dry conditions is not a good idea because mounds are absent and/or the ants are deep in the ground.

Are either of these fire ants?

Imported Fire Ant - FAQ
These are not ants, but rather a wingless solitary (non-social) female wasp in the family Multillidae. Females are wingless and typically colorful; males have wings. The common name for the group is "velvet ants." Here in Central Texas we have about 40 species of velvet ants, some small and some big. The "hiss" is called "stridulation" and is caused by washboard-textured body segments rubbing rapidly against one another.

Fire ants reproduce opportunistically when conditions are wet and warm. They are found in all types of soil, but they do better in open pastures and sunny, grassy places than in thick shaded woods. Polygyne colonies (those with multiple queens/mound) can reproduce by budding off new colonies and spread by walking a few meters per year.
