The diseases we vaccinate against have not become worse in recent years, they have always been serious. However, we now know more about the diseases and the serious illness and disability they can cause. In recent years new vaccines have been developed, so people no longer have to face the risk of these diseases.

Rabies - This is a deadly virus to both you and your dog. It affects the central nervous system of all mammals. This is transmitted through a bite that breaks the skin. There are different strains of rabies most commonly carried by dogs, cats, raccoons, skunks, fox and bats. Distemper - This is a highly contagious, usually fatal disease. This affects the dogs central nervous system.

Since a person's immune system is better prepared to deal with a particular infection after successfully overcoming an initial exposure to something resembling it, vaccines are designed to expose the body to a disease-causing organism and to stimulate the immune system to produce a natural infection-fighting response. Your mare should be on a regular vaccination program that includes Tetanus, Eastern and Western Encephalitis, Influenza, Equine Herpes Virus 4 (respiratory form of rhinopneumonitis) and West Nile Virus. In addition, she should receive equine herpes virus 1(an abortive form of rhinopneumonitis) at the 5th, 7th, and 9th month of pregnancy. We use a product called Pneumabort K produced by Fort Dodge.

The short answer is that we can't, at least not at the present time and state of development. Recent research suggests that a prolonged QT-interval could be an important cause for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Mutations in the KCNJ2 gene are associated with Andersen syndrome (AS). AS is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by periodic paralysis, skeletal developmental abnormalities and a prolonged QT-interval (see point 2) with ventricular arrhythmias. Because of the prolongation of the QT-interval, AS is considered a subtype of long QT syndrome.

Although we might not think these diseases are very serious because we don't see them in our communities, they do still exist and can be very deadly. Before the MMR vaccine, measles used to kill hundreds--sometimes thousands--of people a year. In the 1920's over 10,000 people a year died from diphtheria. And in the 1940's and 50's tens of thousands of children were crippled and killed by polio.

A number of diseases affect roses. Where the weather is humid, roses that descend from Rosa foetida (most reds and yellows) and those that decend from China Roses (most remontant roses) are apt to develop small back spots on the leaves or canes. These spots are a a fungal disease called blackspot. A leaf with a touch of blackspot is doomed. The fungus spreads easily, and if not taken care of, can defoliate a plant in several weeks.

If a current motor vehicle record is on the data base, the information is pulled for a renewal notice to be provided. Although Florida Statutes do not require that DMV provide renewal notices for motor vehicle registration, all records are provided as a courtesy. Renewal notices are now provided for county tax collectors or private vendors to print renewal notices. A county may elect not to send a renewal notice to its residents. Even if a notice is printed, the notice may get lost in the mail.

State of Texas requires that all pets be vaccinated for rabies.Vaccinations should be done after the dog/cat is three months and before it becomes 4 months old, with a booster shot given 12 months from the date of the first rabies vaccination.
