There are many different Cyrillic fonts available on the Internet for download. Below are instructions for installing the standard Windows Cyrillic fonts for Win95/98/NT and for installing the specific two Cyrillic fonts needed for Macintosh users to access the RAO online Russian catalogue. NOTE: You may need your Windows95 CDROM for the installation. If you don't have the CD, you will need to go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/download/lang.exe and download this file.

Cyrillic is one of two Slavonic alphabets, which forms the basis for the Russian alphabet, the alphabets of Southern and Eastern Slavs as well as for the alphabets of several states of the former Soviet Union. Six Apart and SUP chose Cyrillic alphabet as one of criteria for the licensing agreement as opposed to the Latin alphabet, which forms the foundation for English and many other Western European languages. The problem is a file filter setting within CorelDraw and how it is interpreting the file you're trying to import. You are probably selecting the encapsulated postscript (.eps) filter to open our .eps files. Most album name in 3m-tunes is written in Burmese fonts that means you must have appropriate Burmese font installed on your machine. Currently, Win Innwa font type is used and can be downloaded here. Any Adobe Type 1 PostScript font can be installed with the program addpsfnt supplied with CET. You must supply the AFM file and the PFB (or PFA) file for each font you want to add to CET [see Q2.2 and Q2.3]. You usually do not install a single font but a font family. In general, Linux would support Windows fonts. Most recent versions support TrueType (TTF) fonts and graphic envrionments such as Gnome will let you install pretty much as simply as on a Mac. However, Linux is far from being as homogeneous and simple to use as proprietary software such as Windows and Mac OS. In all instances, we can offer only very limited support for Linux envrironments, due to the high degree of variability in graphic support, as well as printing support.

If you are running in OSX-native programs, fonts are best dragged into <Your Hard Disk>/System/Library/Fonts/ folder to avoid problems with permissions.

If you are using System 7 or later all you need to do is drop the fonts you wish to use on your system folder and they will automatically be placed in the Font folder. If you are using an older version of the system software you will need to drop the fonts on the system file itself. Before installing fonts determine whether you wish to use True Type or Postscript. For Postscript install the .bmap file and the file with no suffix. For Trutype just install the .suit file.

Authors of some fonts do not allow us to enable the Install feature for their fonts. You can download and install them manually.

All college computers should have Navajo Fonts installed by default. Should yours not have them please contact the IT department. If neither your X server nor your X font server supports you can try one of the TruType font servers: xfstt (http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts/) or xfsft (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/ .

The best answer is not to have "all of these fonts". One of the greatest mistakes a beginning DTPer makes is to use 20 different fonts on one small publication. The best thing to do is keep to a smaller number of fonts that serve your needs best. Plus, PageMaker's performance decreases dramatically with respect to the number of fonts installed in your system. Most publications look best when you use only two or so typefaces. Simpler is usually better when it comes to typefaces.

We use web fonts for body text and for menus, because they are easier to read, can be updated in the CMS, and can be read by search engines. Traditionally web designers have used Arial and Verdana for body text. However there are much wider choices now, particularly if your target market uses Windows XP.
