Because the assessment is of interest to various parts of the government, EPA has consulted with the Interagency Working Group on Dioxin (IWG) on its draft dioxin reassessment. Based on that consultation, the EPA, along with other members of the IWG, asked the National Academy of Sciences to provide an additional review to help ensure that the risk estimates contained in the draft are scientifically robust and that there is a clear delineation of all associated uncertainties.

Development of the dioxin reassessment has taken longer than expected. It took substantial time to collect, assess, and portray in the document the significant and latest evolving data on dioxin. In addition, there has been significant controversy surrounding the science of dioxin. EPA has been rigorous and thorough throughout the development of the draft reassessment to ensure that it has been responsive to both scientific peer reviews and extensive public consultation and comment.

Given the federal government's commitment to sound science and the conclusion of the IWG that the draft report could benefit from additional review and analysis by the NAS, the IWG asked the NAS to review the data and analyses presented in the draft reassessment. The NAS review will assist the IWG in properly characterizing the uncertainties associated with the draft report and in ensuring that the risk estimates contained in this assessment are scientifically robust.

The document sent to the NAS is a draft for review and it does not represent the final position of EPA or of the Federal Government. Furthermore, the draft conclusions and draft science policy decisions in the dioxin reassessment are EPA's alone do not represent consensus by all agencies in the federal government and are intended to address questions related to EPA's statutory mandates.

Under Missouri's Constitution, all assessments for property tax purposes must be based upon market value and be uniform within the same class or subclass of property. Reassessment is the review of all the property in a county to ensure the assessments are uniform and equitable. The assessor updates the assessments in each county to equalize values among the taxpayers and adjusts value to reflect current market conditions.

The Nassau County Department of Assessment has contracted with the Cole Layer Trumble Company (CLT) to perform the reassessment. CLT is widely recognized as the industry leader in the appraisal of real property. During its 62-year history, CLT has successfully completed over 2,500 reassessment projects in 44 states, including more than 200 in New York State. In addition, CLT will be utilizing the services of local appraisers and real estate experts to assist in the project.

Based upon the findings of the chief insurance regulators of Maine, Massachusetts and Tennessee, as well as the rest of the other 50 states, UMUM Provident Corporation agreed to change its claim handling processes and to reassess some claims going back as far as 1997. UNUM has agreed to reassess over 200,000 claims.

Registered students who decide not to attend must withdraw from classes prior to the first day of school to avoid being charged tuition. Beginning the first day of classes and thereafter, students will need to contact the Discontinuance Office (B-150 ASB, 801-422-7705) to drop all classes. We do not recommend dioxin testing. Tests for measuring dioxin levels in humans are not routinely available. Laboratories that offer dioxin testing generally are not certified for that testing (as is required for clinical laboratories doing medical testing). Furthermore, their detection levels may not be low enough to detect dioxin levels that occur in the general population.

SW: As many as it takes. Some parts come out just right the first time I put pen to paper. Others take seemingly endless tweaking. Because I was curious, I saved every version of Chapter 1 of Just Breathe as I was writing it. I have about ten versions now, and this is before the copy editor gets her hands on it. SW: I love this question, because it means the setting of the book felt real to the reader.

That is your choice. Some opt to grade them; some deliver a tentative grade (“If this draft were your final version, it would merit a D because…”); some hold off on grading to encourage exploratory thinking and risk-taking. In any case, when responding to drafts your focus should be on formative comments: that is, posing questions, affirming what is working, pointing out shortfalls, and making suggestions so that students can put your comments to use as they revise.
