Our purpose is to provide information, advocacy and mutual support for people who stutter and their families.

It varies widely. Some of us struggle on every word, others speak fluently much of the time. There's no such thing as a "typical" stutterer.

Our main monthly meetings are friendly and informal. Attendance ranges from 15 to 40 people. We open the meeting by "checking in" to share recent experiences. Then we usually have a discussion program to exchange information about stuttering and handling stuttering-related situations.

NSA/CSS has its own internal oversight process within the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The OIG has the authority to conduct inspections, audits and investigations to ensure that NSA/CSS operates with integrity, efficiency and effectiveness. The alcoholic learns that the people closest to him no longer intend to enable the disease, but instead, each person has a commitment to support only recovery. He is told he can turn to anyone in the group at any time. They will do whatever they can to help him get into recovery, but no one is willing to help him stay sick any longer. We won't allow him to continue on with his drunkenness.

Recovery is an ongoing process and building a network of community supports through recovery groups [go to links] is the most proven way to maintain long-term abstinence.

Self-Help Group (SHG) is a small voluntary association of poor people, preferably from the same socio-economic background. They come together for the purpose of solving their common problems through self-help and mutual help. The SHG promotes small savings among its members. The savings are kept with a bank. This common fund is in the name of the SHG. SHG is a group formed by the community, which has specific number of members like 15 or 20.

There are hundreds of support and self-help groups that are actively involved in promoting the interests of patients with particular conditions. The Patient UK website provides links to self help groups. Helpbox, a nationally recognised database of patient information books, leaflets, audio-visual aids and self-help groups produced by the Help for Health Trust (tel: 01962 849 100), is available in most medical libraries.

We offer meetings which are held on the first Sunday of each month (unless it is a holiday weekend) at Good Samaritan Hospital, 12th Street and McDowell Rd., Phoenix, in the Sandstone North room located on the ground floor of the hospital. The Newcomer's meeting is at 3:30 p.m. and the General meeting is at 4:30 p.m. We also sponsor social events throughout each month. We recommend calling your local rape crisis, domestic violence or women's center and asking them if they are aware of any resources. If you live near a major university, their counseling and testing center may have information, too -- although whether or not such groups (if on campus) would be available to a non-student may vary. Also, try the United Way referral service or local Mental Health Association to see if they have lists of support groups.

The self-study will describe how UNC meets the NCAA standards (called operating principles) in three basic areas: academic integrity; governance and commitment to rules compliance; and commitment to equity, student-athlete welfare and sportsmanship. Cultivate a keener sense of other people's emotional needs judging by their verbal and physical cues. Learn the BIGGEST repertoire of "appropriate" feeling responses you can, based on cues from others, and use them, even if they feel automated or phoney. This will get you through to your old age with the least amount of damage to yourself from mistakes.
