When special symbols are placed at the beginning and the end of URL addresses, the reader is certain to know where the starting and ending point of the address are. These special symbols prevent any unnecessary confusion when URL addresses contain other common grammatical symbols like commas, hyphens, and periods. Hyperlinks are useful for documents when they are read on a computer screen, but if printed out on paper, the hyperlink looses its purpose.
