In our first year (June 2006 - June 2007) Breakneck plans to publish at least 5 titles, with four already on the docket. We would like to add a few books to that number with every passing year, maxing out around 20 titles per year. Not yet. As a small publisher, we prefer to invest in primo covers and marketing rather than attempting to entice authors with tiny advances.

We publish at least four books per year - one per quarter. The books contain the winning entries from the quarterly Iliad Literary Awards contests plus the Honorable Mention and other awards who choose to have their entries published. We're working with three editors: Lauren Rossini, formally with Lone Eagle Press. Anastasia Brodeur, a freelance editor who has worked on several of Jeremy Robinson's previous novels. In January of 2007 we forged a relationship with Charity Heller Hogge at Mighty Pen Editing. Charity has signed on as our lead editor and will be handling the majority of our books.

You might think that because we're a small publisher your odds are better for being published here. Sadly, that is not true. If anything we are more picky. With so few books released, each one has to be above and beyond the competition. We will only be publishing books we feel 100% passionate about. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give us a try, just don't get your hopes up because we're a small press. Not yet.

Thankfully, no. The way it works: Either I go to my publisher with a proposal and the publisher says “Yes, I want it for X dollars,” and the agent and publisher go back and forth on that, or the publisher and I sign a contract specifying that I’ll produce 3 more books in the series. That’s NOW, of course. When I was first starting out, I had to produce a lot of evidence I intended to write those books, including outlines and maybe sample chapters.

Backstreets is generally published every three or four months, though the actual publication date is affected by breaking news, tour coverage and the occasional special issue. Each issue of the magazine is progressively numbered, and when you subscribe, each year of your subscription guarantees you the next four issues.

We will, however, be taking steps with our more successful titles to make them returnable and get them placed in stores, first locally and then nationally. The process is challenging, especially for a small publisher, but not impossible.

Typically a sales force comes along with a distributor. That's part of their job and the real reason for having them is to get placed in national chains. As we work on building online sales and getting placed in local stores, a sales force isn't necessary—the personal touch works just fine. For more on distributors, see the previous question. Well, of course! How could we sell books at all if we didn't? Our discount ranges from 40 - 55%, the industry standard.

How can we? MWP is a small publisher and produces only a small number each year. Consequently, we must continually promote and sell all our books, old or new! Our latest books do receive a large promotional push in order to set reorder patterns, but once that’s accomplished, we must keep promoting. We never consider our books to be "back-listed." In fact, some of our books are selling in greater numbers seven years after their publication date.

In the future yes, but a publisher must have published books from three separate authors to be eligible. So until this happens we will not be eligible to have CIPs. For books published before eligibility we would most likely publish second editions so they can be added to the Library of Congress database.
