The WMS is an all-volunteer society and has no paid employees. A board of officers and directors are nominated by a committee composed of non-board members. WMS members interested in serving on the board should make this known to the nominations committee. Elections are held at the annual business meeting each spring. A president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer are elected by name. By custom, the vice-president acts as Program Chairman.

The Washington Map Society, located in Washington, DC, is one of the premier map societies in the world. It began in 1979 as a small, informal group interested in cartography, cartographic history, and collecting maps. Since then it has expanded its interests to include modern cartographic concerns. Its membership is now approaching 400, but it has retained the feel of a small informal group.

Membership is open to anyone interested in maps, and our members come from all walks of life. Maps have an appeal which extends well beyond those who work with them, and many members have no professional connection to cartography. For others, maps have played a central role. Some are/were academics, archivists, librarians, or cartographers, or served in a diplomatic, military, or intelligence capacity. Whatever your background, you'll find a place in the WMS.

You can attend interesting lectures; learn about and from map collectors, dealers, and professionals; take behind-the-scene tours of public and private collections and exhibits; learn about resources at the Library of Congress and elsewhere; receive our journal and membership directory; and support worthwhile cartographic projects, such as the Ristow Prize.

We have a remarkable number of members - nearly half - who live outside greater Washington area. A few live in distant parts of Maryland or Virginia, but most are in about 35 other states. Over two dozen are outside the United States. Thus a substantial portion of our members find it worthwhile to belong despite their distance from DC. The quality and scope of The Portolan is undoubtedly instrumental to this. There are, however, more intangible but compelling reasons to belong.

The Society is run by a Board. An AGM is held every twelve months to elect officers, though an extraordinary general meeting may be called at an time. The ultimate decision makers are the members of the Society.

Yes. In portable applications it may not be practical to have a map for each location, so you may choose to operate without a background map. You would see a small cross at the center of the display (your location) and range rings to indicate distance. Both the center cross and the distance rings are enabled from the Configure Screen configuration screen. The antenna may be mounted indoors provided the building is of wood construction with no metal to block the radio signals.

Our sympathies on this front lie with Socrates, who suggested a society of philosopher kings who ruled as was best for the population as a whole. He dictated that these would be raised and sent through education strictly according to merit, and that they then would be cast into the world to make a path for themselves so that they would understand the reality citizens face.

All members pay membership dues (except Life Members) and these funds are used to pay for the administrative and operational activities. We receive some donations and also enjoy some profit from our annual convention and local security presentations.

The constitution is very specific about necessity of keeping accurate and proper accounts and the way in which they are audited. If the Society or anyone connected with it does not act within the terms of the constitution they could be breaking the law and render themselves liable to prosecution. All members have a right to inspect the books at any time.

We find Google Image Search and Yahoo Image Search to be very effective. Not necessarily. It may be a good idea to register books, plays, musical recordings, portfolio photographs and illustrations and any other significant or important works. However, it may be cumbersome and expensive for a professional photographer who creates thousands of images each year to register all of his or her images. In this case, it may be sufficient to register only portfolio images, or images taken for clients with whom the photographer expects to have difficulties.
