During a press conference on March 24th, the NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science, Dr. Edward Weiler, announced that public safety required NASA to cause CGRO to reentry the Earth's atmosphere. This process would begin on May 29th, with reentry occurring on June 3rd. Some parts of the spacecraft will fall into uninhabited regions of the Pacific. While debris would be scattered over a region of 16 by 962 miles, debris are expected to impact only 62 square yards (52 square meters).

The Compton Observatory is one of NASA's four Great Observatories, with the mission of observing the sky in the light of gamma-rays. Gamma-rays are photons with greater energies than X-rays. The gamma-ray sky is variable and dynamic. Compton has observed many new sources with its four instruments: the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), the Compton Telescope (COMPTEL), the Energetic Transient Experiment (EGRET) and the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer (OSSE).

The space will always be used, so buy the biggest Compton garage you can afford provided that it fits comfortably in the space available. There are no precise guidelines regarding the size. Often the size of the garage is dictated by the space available. Compton offer a wide range of sizes to suit every space. If you are replacing an existing garage, you should consider whether to have the same size again or perhaps larger.

Ideally your Compton garage should have a clear space at least 18" wide on all sides, if possible. This ensures easy access for both installation and future maintenance. In reality this is often not practical and at many sites it is not needed. A reduced clearance is often possible on one or two sides. If the space around your garage is restricted remember to allow for any roof overhang. You should also cut back or remove any nearby shrubs and trees. Remember to allow for future growth.

The most convenient location for a garage at an average detached or semi detached house is often set back behind the house, leaving enough access to the back garden. This allows for a wider garage where access is limited. Offset doors can be particularly useful in this situation. Setting the garage further back is often more acceptable to planners and often ensures that below ground drains and services are not disrupted.

Compton garages can be easily lined and insulated using specially designed and inexpensive lining clips. Using the lining clips it is easy to fix timber battens to the concrete panels. Inexpensive polystyrene or fibreglass insulation is fitted between the battens which also support the lining boards.

Although providing an electricity supply to a Compton garage is normally a straightforward task, for safety reasons we recommend that you consult an approved electrician first. Since January 1st 2005 all electrical work must be completed in accordance with IEE wiring regulations and BS 7671. Notifiable work must be either notified directly to the local building control department or completed by an operator who is approved under the Part P Electrical Competent Person Scheme.
