why do they put moons on the outhouses?

Comments to the Curator!
I just started collecting outhouses about six months ago, and my collection is pretty slim. It all started with two sets of pictures I thought were cute at Wal-Mart. Then I received for Christmas 6 small ceramic figures. I also have a calendar, "Ma and Pa" outhouse salt and pepper shakers, two small pictures, a ceramic man in a night dress and cap with a lantern running to a outhouse. One unique thing I have received is an outhouse on top of a set of coasters.

Why do some outhouses have quarter moons on the door? Do they serve a purpose?

Comments to the Curator!
It was back in the late '40's and the place was a Boy Scout camp, Camp Ingawanis in northern Iowa. For some reason the outhouses at the camp were called kaibos (kai as in "sky" and bo as in "beaux"). There was a young man that we all picked on, as young kids do. Thinking about what we did to this poor kid makes me feel very ashamed and wondering if we damaged him forever, poor soul. We called him Chief Kaibo. One evening, Chief Kaibo had to go to the kaibo and we followed.

Earth has only one moon. If you count all the moons around all the planets in our solar system, there are 61 (Earth has one, Mars has two, Jupiter has 16, Saturn has 18, Uranus has 15, Neptune has 8, and Pluto has one). There may be more that we haven't discovered yet!

What are shepherd moons?

Cassini-Huygens: FAQ
Shepherd moons are small moons that appear to be responsible for defining the boundaries of some -- and maybe most -- of Saturn's rings. Their gravitational fields keep the ring particles from straying, much like a shepherd keeps sheep from wandering away from the flock. One startling example is the F-ring, which is tended by two tiny moons, Prometheus and Pandora. They seem to be responsible not only for maintaining the slender ring, but for its apparent braids and kinks.

What are shepherding moons?

Frequently Asked Questions About Saturn's Rings
Shepherding moons are satellites that orbit along side a ring. Due to gravitational effects from the shepherding moon, the edges of the rings are kept sharp and distinct. If the shepherding moon was not present, then the ring material would have a tendency to spread out. If two satellites are orbiting on both sides of the ring, then ring will be constrained on both sides into a narrow band.

I have half-moons on my nails. What are these?

Lee Nails: FAQS
The technical term for this is the "lunula." The light color of the lunula, also known as the "half moon," is caused by the reflection of light where the matrix (also known as the mother of the nail, where nail growth begins) and the connective tissue of the nail bed join.

Q1: How many moons have been found around Jupiter in total?

FAQ for Irregular Moons (LACMS, Bristol University)
Regular moons tend to move on near circular orbits, are usually big (e.g.,Jupiter's Galilean moons) and were thought to have been formed alongside the planet in the proto-planetary nebula. Irregular moons tend to be very distant from the planet, on highly tilted orbits; the orbits are often eccentric (cigar shaped) and many irregulars are retrograde (they move in the opposite sense to the way the planet spins). They are thought to have been captured. No the moons don't form a ring.

Do other planets or moons have quakes?

Earthquake FAQ - UTIG
Yes, maybe. The Viking space mission placed a seismometer on Mars in 1976, but it never measured any quakes, probably because it was a very low-sensitivity instrument. Some of the surface features observed on Venus, Io (a moon of Jupiter), and the icy satellites of the outer planets suggest that seismic activity might occur there. But for now we don't have seismographs in place to be sure. Institute for Geophysics; J.J. Pickle Research Campus, Bldg.

Does Mars have any moons orbiting it?

Mars
Mars actually has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, although neither is nearly the size of Earth's moon. Both are irregularly shaped, somewhat like potatoes. Phobos is 27 km (17 miles) long, while Deimos is 15 km (9 miles) long; both moons keep their long axes pointed toward Mars. Phobos is about 5984 km (3717 miles) from Mars and orbits the planet once every 7 hours and 39 minutes; Deimos is about 20,070 km (12,471 miles) from Mars and orbits Mars once every 1 day, 6 hours, and 18 minutes.
Related Questions

Where did these moons come from?

Mars
Nobody really knows how Phobos and Deimos ended up orbiting Mars; it is most often suggested that they used to be asteroids which were captured in Mars's gravity.

When were Mars's moons discovered?

Mars
Mars's moons were discovered by Asaph Hall (1829-1907), an astronomer with the US Naval Observatory. On August 10, 1877, after a long search for Martian moons, Hall found Deimos. Two days later, while tracking Deimos's motion, Hall noticed another object orbiting closer to Mars, which has now been named Phobos.

Why do outhouses have a crescent moon on the door?

Comments to the Curator!
We have just visited your homepage and we thought that you may be the expert that we have been looking for. My sister and I are doing a social studies project on outhouses. We live in West Virginia and hear our parents talking about building an outhouse at our camp. We became interested when we lost our battle for a bathroom at the camp. We need more information on the history of the outhouse and when they were replaced with indoor plumbing. Thanks in advance for your help.

No, instead of consulting almanacs, we've designated a monthly time that everyone can plan on, even if they have never attended before, or have not attended for awhile. Thealogically, Goddess is accessible to us at any time of the month. Meeting in the middle of the month avoids conflicts with Sabbat rituals. The Order does not sponsor these, as open public are already available to the community through other groups.

why do outhouse doors have half moons on them?

Comments to the Curator!
Hello, Recently my husband built an old fashioned outhouse (tool storage) in our wildflower garden in the back yard. We've been having a discussion regarding the crescent moon on the door versus a starburst. The moon means ladies only, the starburst for men only. Right? But is the crescent moon typically waxing or waning? We would like to keep it looking as authentic as possible.

Will the IMP image the moons of Mars?

Frequently Asked Questions
you know, the IMP is a panoramic camera. It takes data one small image at a time, and these small frames are pasted together to make larger images and panoramas. When the frames are retreived from the lander, they are stitched together initially by a computer program. Often, the seams of individual frames are visible because of a phenomenon known as parallax.

Why are there moons on Outhouse doors?

Frequently Asked Questions about Outhouses
The answer lies in the lighting inside because outhouses were around before electricity. The best way to let light in was to put in a window. For privacy reasons, most outhouses were designed with the window above the line of sight. Many early outhouses contained a decorative "moon cutout" covered by glass. This allowed just enough light in to take care of business! It also allowed the real moon to shine through during the night.

So far, scientists have found those elements in the right combinations only on Earth. But certain locations in our solar system hold at least pieces of the puzzle of life - Mars, comets and, possibly, Jupiter's moon Europa. Mars is the most likely location for life. Learn more >>

Two weeks ago, we lost a 37-year-old outhouse built of historic railroad ties, in a fire that took several outbuildings. The outhouse itself was sturdy enough, but aside from the sentimental and historical issues it had long out-lived it's pleasantness. Aside from the loss of a necessary 'convenience', I just remembered that also consumed by the flames was a 1976 Sears catalog.
