Paradise South is bordered by Paradise Road on the north, Carpenter Road on the west, the Tuolumne River on the south, and Hwy 99 on the east. The area includes residences in both city and county jurisdictions.

Some activities include: adult basic education classes, neighborhood clean-ups, home revitalizations, an after school program, recreational games, a mentoring program, and special events.

Operation Weed & Seed is a multi-agency strategy that "weeds" out violent crime, gang activity, drug use, and drug trafficking, in targeted high crime neighborhoods and "seeds" the target area by restoring these neighborhoods through social and economic revitalization. The "Mesquite Street Neighborhood" has been designated as a Weed & Seed site by the United States Department of Justice. The Weed & Seed boundaries are Lohman Avenue, Madrid Street, Solano Avenue, and Main Street.

Some activities and programs include: the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center, neighborhood clean-ups, after school programs, parenting classes, scouting, sports activities, and special events.

WEED & SEED is a community-based multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and neighborhood restoration. Weed and Seed links federal, state, and local social services, private sector plus community efforts, to maximize the impact of existing community programs and resources.

Community involvement is essential to the success of a Weed and Seed site. Getting residents and grassroots faith-based and community organizations involved from the very beginning is essential. Basic home refurbishment, repairs, and clean-ups. Supplies and equipment such as painting materials, new doors, windows, and fences are available based upon priority. The Paradise South Steering Committee directs and oversees the administration of the project and funding, implements the Strategic Plan, and sets priorities and direction of the program. The steering committee includes Paradise South Partners from both public and private organizations, businesses, as well as area residents, who all are committed to the goals and objectives stated in the strategy.

The strategy involves a two-pronged approach: law enforcement agencies and prosecutors cooperate in "weeding out" criminals who participate in violent crime and drug abuse, attempting to prevent their return to the targeted area; and "seeding" brings human services to the area, encompassing prevention, intervention, treatment, and neighborhood revitalization. A community-orientated policing component bridges weeding and seeding strategies.

Weed and Seed is a strategy rather than a grant program. Interested communities are eligible to apply for funding from CCDO, based on availability of funds that are awarded on a competitive basis. Individual Weed and Seed sites track their progress on a regular basis. A national Weed and Seed evaluation, which looked at eight sites in detail, was completed in 1999. Lawn WeedOut® - Has some soil activity and takes about two to three weeks to breakdown. Lawn seed should not be planted for 3-4 weeks after using Lawn WeedOut®.
