One benefit of our program is that your son or daughter can study at his or her own time, place, and pace—you will be able to observe your student “going to school” during your off hours.

Of course. Treatment is a time to strengthen family bonds with frequent, supportive, communication. Your child may call you any time he or she wishes. You may call your child any time you wish. Non-emergency calls will be held during therapeutic sessions. Family visitation is every Saturday. If you are unable to attend on Saturday and wish to make special arrangements to visit on another day, we will accommodate you.

Yes. If your child is in treatment, you have already exhibited the strength to seek solutions for your child. Our approach does not leave that solution solely in the hands of an out-of-home treatment program. Ideally, we begin before out-of-home treatment, continue through such treatment (if necessary), and provide post-treatment support. If your child is already in a treatment program, he or she will eventually come home.

While your child is undergoing medical treatment, we understand that it is very important that he or she is able to keep up in school. Within our hospital we have a state-certified teacher on duty fulltime offering class instruction and private tutoring via our Reading, Writing & Recovery® program. This primary program Ironwood offers is termed "Intervention." The secondary, longer, term program is termed "Rehabilitation and Transition.

Yes your child will be able to call you and you will be able to call your child. Instructions on how to do this will be provided prior to your child's departure. You should however bear in mind that we do not recommend that your child call you or that you call him/her too often. Once your child has let you know that he/she has arrived safely, we leave it to each child to call his/her family as and when he/she likes.

A hospital and/or home physical therapist will teach you how to transfer from (bed to chair) after surgery. Non-weight bearing - toe touch only on the affected side for transfers from bed to chair for 4 weeks after surgery. Whenever possible, we encourage the child to remain in school. However, some patients receiving strong chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation are not allowed to go to school until medically stable and temporarily require special school services. Patients who attend Chicago Public Schools qualify for an in-hospital tutoring program. Children returning to school after prolonged treatment/hospitalization can benefit from our Child Life and Family Education School Re-Entry program.

If a child is diagnosed with a contagious disease, the child will require a statement from the doctor indicating that the disease is no longer communicable upon return to the program.

Children may bring breakfast from home if parents wish them to eat breakfast at the program. If your child attends a school where breakfast is served, your child may take part in the breakfast program.

EDS operates two full-day summer camps throughout the summer months at Eisenhower Elementary School and South Fayette Elementary School. Summer Camp is designed for students entering grades K through 7. All students have the opportunity to select from many summer course offerings including cooking classes, arts and crafts classes and a variety of sports classes.
