The Metafile format, also referred to as Picture (one of two standard Windows graphics formats used in Clipboard and disk file representations of graphs; file name extension *.wmf) stores a picture as a set of descriptions or definitions of all components of the graph and their attributes (e.g., segments of lines, colors and patterns of those lines, specific fill patterns, text and text attributes, etc.).

The Bitmap format (one of two standard Windows graphics formats used in Clipboard and disk file representations of graphs; file name extension *.bmp) is similar to another standard Windows graph format--metafile (see above), in that it stores only the representation of the picture (and not the data which are plotted or any information about the analytic properties or settings used to produce the graph).

A general rule of thumb is to use gifs for illustrations and images that contain large areas of flat color, and to use jpgs for photographs and images with continuous tones. If you are scanning the images yourself from photographs it is better to save them in either tif, or eps format. These image formats will preserve the color and sharpness of your pictures the best. However, we will accept jpg or jpeg if it is at least 300dpi. File formats like gif or jpg compress the pictures color and pixel resolution and may not maintain the true color of the image.

The logos used by Windows 95 are windows bitmaps (.BMP) that are 320 pixels wide by 400 pixels high by 256 colors saved in the RGB format. The file size seems strange, stretched, but it is correct, when it is displayed, it will display properly, if your creating your own logos you'll have to take this stretching into account.

Stills (photos or graphics) that are being prepared for an edit need to be prepared as RGB Tiff (*.tif) or Targa (*.tga) files sized to 720x540 pixels at 72 DPI. Animations need to be rendered at 720x486 with a .9 pixel aspect ratio. Although a video picture is actually 720x486, its pixels aren't square; they're shorter than they are wide. In other words, if a circle is grabbed from videotape and displayed on a computer screen, it will appear to be an oblong, slightly wider than it is tall.
