You have a good chance of seeing animals on the river rafting and jet boat trips that go out of Talkeetna. You might also see moose, bears, and trumpeter swans from the plane on a McKinley Flightseeing Tour , but they will look small and far away. Otherwise, your best bet is the early bus tours or shuttle buses that go out into Denali Park. The Denali Park Road is a major "thru-way" for wildlife. Without question, the best place and time to see deer, wild turkey, and other small wildlife is Cades Cove. In years past, wildlife were very shy and you had to time your searches for the feeding times at dawn and dusk. However, through the years the wildlife have become more tame as Park visitors have grown in number and you can now even see the deer feeding at midday in Cades Cove. Bear can be found out on some trails and near campgrounds--looking for food.

In southern Africa (Botswana and Zimbabwe) the best wildlife viewing is during the dry season period April through October each year with July, August, and September being the most desirable months. Wildlife viewing is, in part, predicated on the amount of surface water available. During the rains (November through April) wildlife is scattered as there is abundant surface water (puddles, perennial rivers) to drink.

Feeding of bears is PROHIBITED by law in the township. The feeding of bears brings them into close contact with people and pets. Birdfeeders should be raised 8' by a pulley system or brought in at night. Feeding of other wildlife can lead to accidental bites or scratches, which would require this animal to be destroyed and tested for rabies or the person bitten would need to receive rabies post-exposure vaccinations.

All of Waterfront Park is open & offers free public viewing for Thunder. The show is so massive that it can be seen almost anywhere. Waterfront Park will have continuous action and interactive attractions from 11 AM until the firework's finale at 10 PM. Along River Road is always a popular place. Our bear viewing is from May to September each year. In May, June and July bears are out of hybernation and feeding on sedge grass, barnicles and mussles on the beaches. In the beginning of August through to September visitors get the view the grizzlies and cubs catching salmon at the mouths of the creeks as the fish begin their journey up stream to spawn. You may also see massive schools of fish gathering at the mouths of the creeks, eagles, wolves and seals.

The Colorado Wildlife Viewing Guide lists Yeoman Park as a good place to view an extensive beaver colony. Many tree and ground squirrels also live in the area. Birds of prey, such as the red-tailed hawk, can be seen, as well as the occasional bald eagle. Mule deer can be observed in the early morning and evening hours. Many opportunities to view wildlife are available on most of the hiking trails on the Eagle Ranger District.

The earlier you arrive, the better your view and the closer you will be to the action. The sound system is set up in the Bowtie area (where Broadway and Seventh Avenue cross), and the video screens on One Times Square (where the Ball is lowered) are easily visible. There are additional screens set up at Broadway and 50th Street, Broadway and 52nd Street, Broadway and 54th Street and Broadway and 58th Street.

The fireworks can be viewed from the softball field located between Mountainside pool and the tennis courts on the east side of Upper Mountain Avenue or snow sledding hill on the west side. Both locations offer excellent views of the fireworks.

There is very little risk of encounters with wildlife at camp. We take precautions so that our food preparation areas do not attract bears and other creatures. We recommend that you not keep food in your tent and that you bring airtight containers for storage of aromatic cosmetics, toiletries and your toothpaste

If weather permits, the float plane pilots will fly near the peak of Mt. Sharatin on Kodiak Island while en-route to and from the lodge. A herd of 35 Mountain Goats hangs around Mt. Sharatin's peak. Occasionally, moose, fox, seals, sea lions and orcas can be seen in the Kukak Bay area. Sea otters and bird life are abundant in the area.

I think the view from the Talkeetna overlook (on the Talkeetna Spur Road just before you reach downtown) on a clear day is unsurpassed!

Any place where you have open sky, away from the lights of a city, and of course it must be dark. That eliminates May, June, and July. Sometimes you can catch a display on a late August night. Some people travel to Alaska in the winter to heighten their opportunity to see a good Aurora display. If you catch it on the right night, oh, what a pleasure!
