Can I run BitWise from a thumbdrive or other removable media?

BitWise IM - FAQ
Click Export to save your preferences to a file. You may place it anywhere, but you will need it again momentarily. Logging settings may not transfer well due to differences in mounting and usage of removable media on different PCs. Windows/Linux: Unzip/untar the file you just downloaded to your thumbDrive. On your drive, you should see a folder named Bitwise. Open the preferences and choose Import and load your preference file that you previously saved on your thumbdrive.

Can BitWise run completely without the server (in a pure IP mode)?

BitWise IM - FAQ
No, BitWise does not offer a pure direct to IP mode. The reasons for this are many, but the most important is that it would be difficult to incorporate it into the program without making the program needlessly more complex. Further, without being able to use the server for authentication, there would be no way to validate users as they "log in" and therefore the username system (and the reasonable assurance of who is on the other end) would be useless and unreliable.

What are the situations in which data can be lost from removable media?

Removable Media Recovery Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
Typical problems that we have seen with laptop computers are due to mechanical or electronic failure, where either the drive does not spin at all, or if it does, then quiet but persistent 'ticking' or 'crunching' noises can be heard during powering up.

Does GRBackPro ask me for another removable media if the first one becomes full?

Data Backup Software for Windows Professional Tool GRBackPro...
Yes. You will have the option to insert another disk media when the previous one becomes full. There are, however, a few notes about this process. First, the program (by design) is not able to put on the destination disk a file that is bigger that the destination disk itself (i.e. it cannot split that file). The program can create independent destination disks that together form your backup archive.

What will change when I enable the option 'Mount volumes as removable media'?

TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Soft...
You can enable this option, for example, to prevent Windows from automatically creating the 'Recycled' and/or the 'System Volume Information' folders on TrueCrypt volumes (in Windows, these folders are used by the Recycle Bin and System Restore facilities). However, there are some disadvantages. For example, when you enable this option, the 'Computer' (or 'My Computer') list will not show free space on the volume (note that this is a Windows limitation, not a bug in TrueCrypt).

Using Other Removable Media Q: How do I access a cdrom disk?

UT Physics Linux FAQ
The cdrom drives in our lab machines are setup to use the automounter. The automounter will automatically mount the drive for you when you access it, and unmount it when it is not being used. The cdrom will be automatically mounted under /cdrom once you access that directory. You can use most normal Ext2fs (linux) file commands on the cdrom then. Since a cdrom is read-only, commands to write to the device will not work. cd /cdrom

How many people use BitWise?

BitWise IM - FAQ
Long answer: while we do keep usage numbers, we are not releasing them at this time. From experience, people have a perception of how big BitWise "should be," and when the actual number turns out to be bigger or smaller than expected, certain conclusions are made and/or perceptions change unreasonably about BitWise's service. Therefore, we choose to keep usage statistics out of the public domain at this time.

Can I get a virus by using BitWise?

BitWise IM - FAQ
No, viruses cannot be transmitted when casually using BitWise. This is true for one-on-one conversations, conferences, whiteboards or any non-file transfer activity. The only way to get a virus using BitWise would be to actively accept a file transfer from another user and then run the file sent to you. For this reason, we always encourage our users to be cautious when accepting files from others, just like you would be when receiving email attachments.

Is BitWise HIPAA compliant?

BitWise IM - FAQ
Because BitWise is only used for transmission of data (not storage of data), our access controls and logs of who is granted what rights (i.e. who has access to use BitWise and thus receive the data) is sufficient for HIPAA in most environments. That is to say, the information being transmitted over BitWise must come from somewhere--which would be your HIPAA-compliant environment; BitWise is only used for transmission, and our transmission encryption and access controls meet HIPAA guidelines.

BitWise IM - FAQ
Absolutely not! BitWise Personal is retaining all of its features, and will continue to receive enhancements in the future. No features were removed from Personal when Plus was released. BitWise Plus adds features that benefit the security-conscious (a.k.a. those with healthy paranoia), and since many users would probably not use the Plus capabilities even if they were available, Personal can hardly be called crippleware.
