How cold hardy are the Ophiopogons (mondos)?

Tidwell Nurseries; FAQ
In general, the mondos are not as cold hardy as the Liriopes. Although most are rated for zone 6 or 7, we have found that regular mondo, dwarf mondo, and black mondo will perform well in zone 5 as long as they are planted in a protected area. We recommend creating a "micro-climate", an enclosed area such as a courtyard, surrounded by other shrubs and in a shady to semi-shady setting. Please note that these three are the only mondos that we recommend using as far north as zone 5. top of page

Question: What does winter hardy mean?

Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Valley Roses - Hardy Ros...
Answer: First, we don't give our roses any winter protection. By spring, some plants will have various degrees of winter die back or no die back of their canes that determine our measurement of winter hardiness. We have three categories of winter hardiness: hardy to the tip, hardy to the snowline and hardy to the crown. If a rose is hardy to the snowline, the canes above the average snowdepth -- between 10 and 20 inches -- are dead, but everything beneath the snowline is alive.

Question: How do I get my hardy roses ready for winter?

Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Valley Roses - Hardy Ros...
Answer: If they're healthy and well-watered, you don't have to do anything if the rose is hardy in your Zone. If you're growing tender roses, you may have to give them complete protection to get them through the winter. All roses will benefit from a shovel-full or two of well-rotted manure or compost placed over the crown of the plant. Apply this material after the first hard frost, so it doesn't prompt the plant to put on new growth.

Colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by several different viruses. A cold may last for about one week, but some colds last longer, especially in children, elderly people, and those in poor health. In the United States, colds account for more visits to the doctor than any other condition. Adults get an average of two to four colds per year, mostly between September and May. Young children suffer from an average of six to eight colds per year. Colds are highly contagious.

Frequently Asked Questions - HeadShaver.org
Once you shave your head, you'll hear this one often, especially in winter. It's often accompanied by the observation that most of our body heat is lost through our head. While this is true, it's also true that most of that is lost through our ears. Having no hair is (theoretically) only 20% colder than having a full head of hair. Seriously, though, it is colder, but not as much as many people think it is. It's analagous to a full beard vs. a shaved face.

Alcor: FAQ - Technical
Whether tissues are preserved by vitrification or freezing, cells end up in an unfrozen cryoprotectant solution. This solution becomes more and more viscous (syrupy) with cooling until a temperature called the glass transition temperature is reached. At this temperature, the viscosity rises dramatically, and the solution becomes a glassy solid, locking all molecules into place. The glass transition temperature is near -120°C for typical organ vitrification solutions.

WHAT DO I DO FOR MY CHILD WITH A COLD?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A cold is a runny or stuffy nose caused by a virus. Average healthy children average 6 colds per year though it is not unusual to for them to get 2 colds per month during the "sick" months of winter. Nasal drainage may be clear, cloudy, yellow or green. The color of the drainage has no significance in diagnosing a bacterial infection, sinusitis or a need for antibiotics. There is no cure. Treatments are directed at increasing comfort until the viral infection runs it course.

Is it ever too cold to snow?

Frequently Asked Questions about Snow Crystals
In principle it can snow at any temperature below freezing. It snows at the South Pole even though the temperature is rarely above -40 C (-40 F). In more hospitable climates, however, it doesn't snow so much when the temperature is below around -20 C (-4 F). When a parcel of moist air cools, it starts producing snow before it gets that cold. By the time the temperature drops to -20 C, the snow has already fallen and the air is pretty dry.

Question: I want to grow clematis with my roses. What colors of clematis go well with hardy roses?

Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Valley Roses - Hardy Ros...
Answer: Determining which colors go well with others can become a science if you let it. We've all seen the familiar "color wheel" that shows complementary and contrasting colors. Reviewing the fundamentals behind complementary and contrasting colors can help you choose which colors to select. But other factors also affect our sense of color. This includes: color brightness, color area (how big/small), color saturation, proximity of colors to one another, light and how we feel about colors.
