In cold weather or water, a wet suit is best. These can always be rented at our rafting center. In milder conditions, a wool sweater or windbreaker is ideal. In warm summer weather, a swimsuit or shorts and T-shirt are appropriate. Always wear laced shoes with sturdy soles (wet suit boots or sneakers are great). Sandals and river socks provide less protection for feet and toes. In cool or cold conditions avoid wearing cotton, either on its own, or under a wet suit or windbreaker.

In the raft or funyak, bring as little as possible. If there is medication you do or might require, keep it with you on the river. Towels, dry clothes, valuables, and other than waterproof cameras should be left locked in your car.

Rapids are rated from Class I (easiest) to Class V (most challenging). Class VI is considered to be not navigable without unreasonable risk of injury. Construction is beginning on a trail bridge across the Uncompahgre River just before you reach Ouray. Hopefully, it will be completed in time for this year's run. In '94 (a dry year) the water here was slightly above the knee (the run crossed the dam in years before that). In a wet year it could be far worse. The crossing at pole creek is also likely to be quite wet - in '94 I barely made it across on rocks. In a normal year it would be knee deep.

In the winter, it is usually quite easy. There is a viewing platform just outside the Holy Cross District Office in Minturn, with viewing scopes that you can use to watch the elk across highway 24. There is an elk herd that almost daily moves slowly northwest as they browse on the uncovered shrubs of that sunny southwesterly facing slope.

We don't sell stand alone moose hunts because they are not as predictable and we want all our clients to be successful. Usually the cows are bellowing the third week of September, but they are always bellowing the last week, which makes this the best week for calling them in. Later in the season the moose will be "talking" on cold mornings and evenings, but it's hard to call the big bulls away from the cows once they are in the rut.
