Pro bono means "for good." A pro bono attorney works without charge. Pro per means legal work for oneself without benefit of counsel or attorney.

On June 23, 1993, the Supreme Court of Florida issued its opinion adopting the new pro bono rules effective October 1, 1993. These pro bono rules provide more definition and structure to the lawyer's responsibility to provide pro bono legal services to the poor. Rule 4-6.1 establishes an aspirational professional responsibility to perform annually twenty (20) hours of pro bono legal services for the poor or to contribute annually $350.00 to a legal aid organization.

The Chief Judge or the Chief Judge's designee in each of Florida's twenty judicial circuits appoints and convenes a circuit pro bono committee composed of local bar association representatives, pro bono and legal assistance program representatives, at least one public member and at least on client-eligible member.

All financial services professionals are encouraged to render public service in some form or fashion. A financial professional may fulfill this responsibility by providing financial education or financial planning services for no compensation to people of limited means, or through public service or charitable organizations.

Pursuant to APR 11 Regulation 103(g), you may earn six credits per year for Pro Bono services delivered through a qualified legal services provider (per APR 8(e)(2)). At least two credits of prerequisite training must first be taken in each year for which you seek Pro Bono credit. Once you have completed such prerequisite training, you may apply for four additional hours of Pro Bono credit after completing at least four hours of pro bono service.

Yes, it is encouraged. We treat pro bono work as regular Firm work, and it is assigned the same way. All work, including pro bono work, is supervised by a partner. Although we have ongoing relations with a number of pro bono organizations, associates can and often do volunteer for specific pro bono projects that were identified by them for the Firm.

You can get credit for work on a firm's pro bono case if you are not compensated for your work by the firm. During the summer this means that the pro bono work must be performed during an entire week in which you are not paid. During the academic year, you cannot bill the firm for hours you spend on a pro bono case. Yes. Students can receive pro bono credit for unpaid summer internships at U.S. Attorney's Offices throughout the country.

Yes. Up to two leaders or coordinators of a student-directed pro bono project may receive pro bono credit for their work administering other students involvement in that pro bono project. Either the supervising attorney or an authorized student representative (approved by CPIL) may sign the Supervisor's Report to verify those students' hours.

Although pro bono work is certainly encouraged, it is not required. In addition, unlike at many other law firms, associates' time spent on approved pro bono matters is tracked, and these hours are counted along with regular billable hours both for meeting the required hours and for bonus consideration. Pro bono assistance usually is available through the legal aid offices in each state. "FindLegalHelp.Org" contains information about finding free or low-cost legal services. Your state maintains current records of registration and discipline information for lawyers licensed to practice in the state. Check the directory of state disciplinary agencies for contact information in your state.

The rules apply to all lawyers who are members of the Maryland bar and maintain their active status with the Client Protection Fund (formerly the Clients’ Security Trust Fund). The commentary to revised Rule 6.1 recognizes that some lawyers are prohibited by constitutional, statutory, rule, or other regulatory restrictions from engaging in representational pro bono service. When those restrictions apply, a lawyer still may discharge his or her professional responsibility under Rule 6.

Occasionally, the court may appoint a member of the Court's Bar to serve pro bono as counsel for an indigent individual in a civil rights case. Pro bono service is required pursuant to DUCivR 83-1.1(3) unless there are substantial and justifiable reasons why a particular pro bono appointment should be waived. There are many ways to administer a pro bono program, both formally and informally, with or without staff. Some programs operate independently while others are administered by a bar association, a legal aid office, or a local non-profit agency.
