Incandescent Bulb or Filament Bulb as its normally known was invented by Thomas Edison. It's not energy efficient. For example, 100 Watt of energy. You put it into a normal Incandescent Bulb or Filament Bulb. Out of that 100 Watt of energy you put into the bulb, 80% (or 80 Watt) is used to heat up the tungsten filament and 20% (or 20 Watt) is used to produce the light. This means only 20% is used to produce light and 80% wasted as heat.

Your lamp should run for approximately 30 hours before it burns out. The lifespan will vary depending on how it is used (i.e., on continuously for long periods vs. repeated brief flashes).

GE does make CFL bulbs for use in 3-way lamps. Check the package for this application. If a regular CFL is use in a 3-way switch, it will work on the middle (medium) setting and it should not damage the bulb. The 3-way switch does not alter the performance of the bulb.

During use, tungsten from the filament evaporates into the gas inside the light bulb. When the tungsten comes in contact with a cool surface it will condense. Often, with incandescent products, the tungsten condenses on the bulb wall, eventually accumulating, and causing darkening of the bulb. Using a dimming switch on an incandescent light bulb will not only reduce the energy consumption of the lamp, but also it will extend the life of the lamp. A 10% reduction in voltage (12 volts) in a lamp designed for 120 volt operation will extend the life almost 400%. However, light output is reduced by 1/3.

Usually, 5W to 11W E27 and 5W to 7W E14 can be operated on a direct voltage between 176V to 340V besides the usual alternating power usage. This means, for instance, energy saving light bulb may be operated with battery supplied 220/230V facilities in internal areas. At the lower limit of 176V the lamps will light perfectly in a environment with a temperature of 5??C to 50??C. They are not sensitive to over-voltages of the direct current grid up to 340V.

A substitution for energy saving light bulbs is only sensible if the the switch intervals are not too short. It takes, after all, ca. 2 minutes at room temperatue until a DULUX has attained its full lighting output = brightness and therefore a turning off should not take place before the passing of this time period.
