Pink eye" or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the covering of the eyeball and lining of the eye socket. There is usually associated eye drainage which may be clear to greenish-yellow and present in varying amounts during the course of the illness. Causes range from a benign viral infection which requires no treatment to a more serious bacterial infection which is very contagious requiring proper antibiotics.

There are four reasons to wear an ocular prosthesis: Comfort, Cosmesis, plus continued Bony Orbital Wall, and Eyelid development. The first two reasons are of immediate importance for parent and child. Comfort is gained with a properly fitted prosthesis, (by relieving the physical stress caused by eye volume loss, and drooping of the eyelid). Cosmesis is recaptured with a lifelike appearance that is once more acceptable to you, your child and peers.

At the time of birth a child???s vision is not fully developed. Major changes take place in the first years of life. Significant eye problems in very young children are relatively uncommon (except for crossed eyes) but, when present, they must be treated very early in life. Generally we would start testing children at about age 3 years, however if you notice any changes in your child’s vision or that they seem to have a turn in one eye you should bring your child in to have their eyes examined earlier. We can use a wide range of tests on children and even have picture charts if your child is too young to know letters.

A small amount of whitish discharge in the inner corner of the eye after sleeping is normal. The majority of eye infections are caused by viruses and do not need antibiotics. Eye discharge is often accompanied by cold symptoms. If your child has eye discharge wipe it away gently with a cottonball or tissue. Apply a warm compress for 10-15 minutes 3 to 4 times a day. Viral conjunctivitis can last as long as the cold symptoms (4 to 7 days).

It is vital that the correct pads are chosen for adults and for children, especially since the infant/child pads would deliver a therapy that may be ineffective on adults. Choosing the right pads must be automatic, with little thinking required.

Your child's first visit to a doctor of optometry for a dilated eye health examination should be within the first six months of life to ensure healthy vision.

If your child exhibits signs of an eye turn or anything unusual, schedule an examination as soon as you notice it. But if your child’s eyes appear normal, and his or her visual behaviour is normal, a first eye examination at age 2-3 is recommended.
