Most trailers that are on the side of the freeway are there for one reason; roasted wheel bearings. Wheel bearing fail mainly because they lack sufficient grease, they get too hot, and disintegrate. With large 15" wheels and tires, the bearings turn at a lower RPM which allows them to run at cooler temperatures, especially at freeway speeds under a load, and in hot weather. Convenient EZ-Lube spindles make lubrication maintenance a breeze.

The 26-inch (559 mm) rear wheel and 20-inch (406 mm) front wheel combination is the most popular. Reasons for using other sizes would be more performance (650c or 700c), lowering of the seat (combos using 20- and 16-inch wheels), or making a bike more compact (20/16 combos). Small wheels don't perform as well, wear more quickly, and have less gyroscopic inertia than their larger counterparts. Small rims and tire sizes can be more difficult to find.

Wheels and tires must be matched. The wheel will have a label stating it's rim diameter, width and contour. The tire selected must be approved by the Tire and Rim Association for use on that particular size wheel. The tire capacity selected should not exceed the capacity rating of the wheel. Use fine steel wool or 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. A final polish with a buffing wheel or 1200 grit sandpaper, or a polishing compound will bring a very bright shine. Not all the armour I make is polished to a mirror finish. I do prefer the armour polished - but I must admit it is a very time-consuming look to achieve. A very satisfactory silk finish can be produced by rubbing with a mildly abrasive foam pad. The finish shown in the armour below, which is one of the earliest I made, is produced by using a black graphite-based compound - applied quite thinly with a cloth dampened with white spirit. This is allowed to dry and then buffed with wire wool.

These lubricate the polishing agent resulting in an extremely ultra fine polish. The Airstreams, when delivered from the factory many years ago, had the natural polished finish of the aircraft aluminum sheets. The owners then used a metal polish available from Airstream dealers to annually maintain the finish.

Treat your wheels like you would treat your paint. Use liquid soap and water only. Do not usa a chemical cleaner such as those "spray and rinse" types. No harsh chemicals. Those spray on wash off stuff will etch any and all surfaces. Your finish will become a little more cloudy (surface etching) each time your use this stuff. They can destroy the silicone seal too if you have a multi-piece wheel. (Trust me on this... I've seen it.)

This is one area of concern that is sometimes made to be more of an issue than it needs to be. The old homemade grease mixture of lard and tar concoction, to the production axle grease, doubtfully compares to the quality of greases we have available today. The open boxing style wheels do require constant maintenance, but using a quality wheel bearing grease is, in my opinion, still far superior to what was available back when.

Yes, you can use an orbital to apply Zaino Z-2, Z-3, or Z-5. I don't recommend it because you waste too much polish that way. The pad on an eleven inch polisher can absorb almost enough polish to coat your entire vehicle. Each time you use an orbital to apply Zaino polish, you are probably wasting as much polish, if not more than you actually applied to the car. Zaino polish applies easily by hand, especially if you dampen the applicator pad with water and spritz it with Z-6 before applying it.

Thoroughly clean floor with a product like Armstrong® Floor Cleaner, let floor dry, then spread Future® Floor Polish evenly with a clean sponge mop, cloth or other applicator. Future® will normally dry in 20-30 minutes. For increased shine and protection, a second coat of Future® may be applied. Allow 8 hours between applications.

Although traditional wisdom has it that French polish is more conducive to sound, hence is better, the issue really isn't that clear. More to the point, the question is how hard and thick the finish is, especially on the top. Although thick, hard finishes will dampen sound, lacquer may be applied just as thinly as French polish, and if properly applied seems to work just as well. There are other considerations as well that should be kept in mind.

Wheel offset is the distance from the mounting surface to the centerline of the tire. Dexter Axle bearing sets are designed for wheel with 0 to ½" inset. Exceeding this offset will shorten bearing life and may lead to dangerous bearing failure.
