On PseudoColor displays (aka, 8-bit displays) there is a limited set of colors available at any one time. xv needs 64 colors to display the thumbnail icons in the visual schnauzer window. Since this would impact how well the current image can be displayed, xv normally uses a private colormap for the visual schnauzer.
