The DVD format introduced the concept of region code so that content providers (e.g., movie studios) can control where they release their copyrighted material. Basically, the world is divided up into regions: The region code(s) of a DVD title is embedded in its digital data. To playback a DVD title released in "region 1", you need a "region 1" DVD player. DVD players with other than "region 1" cannot playback the "region 1" DVD title.

Region Code Enhancement (RCE) is just that, an enhancement to the region code idea. In our answer to the previous question, we discussed that there are region-free DVD players that have been modified after-market by third-party vendors to evade the region code restriction. To counter that, the DVD format now includes a stricter mechanism called Region Code Enhancement. The region code is now embedded in the digital bitstream so it becomes harder to foil by region-free DVD players.

In order to change the region code of a Kaleidescape Player or Reader, a DVD containing the new region code must be present in the Player or Reader's DVD/CD-ROM drive. Kaleidescape recommends the following procedure when changing region codes. Locate the component (Player or Reader) whose region code you wish to change on the Components tab of the Installer Web Utility. Set "When Import Finishes:" to "Keep disc in drive" and click "OK".

A 'Region Code' is a way of ensuring that material intended for 1 region of the globe cannot be viewed on a player from a non-compatible region.

Use C-M-\ to indent a region (selected by setting the point at one end, and having the cursor at the other end, as usual). Perhaps a future version of the emacs mode will include functions that mimic some of C's extra bindings.

The region code is set during the authoring of the DVD – we cannot change the region coding of your master. If we author the DVD we set the region code to ‘0’, which means it will play in all regions.

The major movie producers in the world have set the standard to divide the world into 6 regions and require the DVD released within these 6 regions to be set with region code to protect their interest. Hence, theaters and families in each region will not be able to obtain cheaper discs from those cheaper regions and have to purchase from the normal channels so as to safeguard their interest.

AVIA DVD is region code free. It is not limited to any particular region code. AVIA DVD should play on any NTSC capable DVD player in any region code. The red, green, and blue color filters supplied with AVIA DVD were chosen to be as color selective as practical. Unfortunately, no filters are perfect color separators. They all leak a small amount of the other primary colors.

DVDs are coded into 6 Regions. For example Region 1 codes will only work in the US and Canada. Some DVDs will be coded Region 0 which means it will play anywhere. International buyers please be very careful and read the descriptions to make sure you are buying DVDs that will play in your Region. Most of our DVDs will be Region 1, but some come in Region 0.

REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs can be played in an NTSC- and most PAL-compatible unit.

According to what the public is being told, such coding is a tool to protect copyright and film distribution rights (in other words, movie studio profits). Movies are released in theaters in different parts of the world at different times throughout the year. That Summer blockbuster in the U.S. may end up being the Christmas blockbuster overseas. If that occurs, the DVD version of the movie may be out in the U.S. while it is still showing in theaters overseas.

Code coverage refers to a software engineering technique whereby you track quality and comprehensiveness of your test suite by determining simple metrics like the percentage of {classes, methods, lines, etc} that got executed when the test suite ran.

RCE is a way devised by some of the major film studies to prevent DVDs playing on players that have been modified to play DVDs from regions other then the region of purchase. In reality RCE is little more then a mechanism designed to trick you player into admitting it's not a genuine Region (X) player. Similar systems have been used by Disney in the past and all of these systems can be avoided if your player has an option to manually set the region.

You are given five (5) chances (less if your DVD ROM drive has already been changed) to select a region. Before you select your last regional setting you will be given one final warning:

The region code protection is to comply with the major 8 movie producers in the world. You will have 5 opportunities to change the region code (depend on the DVD ROM) and the region code will be locked after the 5th setting. From then on, you could only play DVD movies set for the region or locked for all regions. DVD X Player is a play program for decoding MPEG1 and MPEG2 using pure software method.

The region code is usually specified on the back of the individual DVD packages, either with a Regional Coding logo of a globe with the region number superimposed over it, or specifically spelled out. For example, while currently-released New Line and Warner DVD titles use the globe logo & number scheme, MGM/UA titles state: "This disc has been encoded for Region 1: The United States, U.S. Territories and Canada.

Economic regions do not typically correspond to political jurisdictions such as state, county, local workforce investment area or municipal boundaries. Similarly, state boundaries do not always match labor market areas as evidenced by New York City's tri-state area or the greater Kansas City area, among others. The WIRED Initiative will focus on labor market areas that are comprised of multiple jurisdictions within a state or across state borders.

I have learned more from looking at other peoples' code than by writing my own code from scratch. What I mean is by looking at and playing with someone else's code then you are creating something even better. I guess you learn about new things you can do with programming. I can remember back when I took the second Computer Science course in college. This course was in Java, where the first course was in C++, but what is important is that the code in the book did not work.

Every DVD movie is released with a region code which prevents a DVD player with a different region code from playing that DVD. A general rule of thumb is: if you can play the DVD, you can copy it. So if you want to copy a DVD, you'll have to make sure you can play it first. If you find yourself in a situation where you can't play the DVD because your DVD reader is set to a different region, you can purchase products on the internet that will remove region code protection from your DVD device.

This means that movies from Region 1 (USA & Canada) will not play on a DVD player regions 2-6. Effectively Region 1 discs play only on Region 1 DVD players, Region 2 discs play only on Region 2 DVD players and so on.

The region code protection in DVD-ROM hardware may be classed into 2 types: A. Phase I (with no region code protection): The hardware itself will not protect the region and the region code is protected by the software. B. Phase II (with region code protection): Use the set region code protect on the hardware as the one for watching movies. As this is the protection by the hardware itself, you should consult DVD-RMO manufacturer for detail information.

This player is progressive scan, has Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built in, and features virtually flawless PAL to NTSC conversion. It also has some wonderful tweak modes for the hard-core user. On the downside, menus are somewhat in "Chinlish" and sometimes hard to decipher Not as tweakable as the Malata, but a well-known manufacturer and contains the same PAL/NTSC conversion chip as the Malata.

All Fujitsu LifeBook models have their DVD drive pre-set at factory to read DVD titles with region codes for specific Asia Pacific markets (e.g. code 3 for Asian, code 4 for Australia, code 6 for China). The first time you play a DVD title with a region code different from the default set, you will be prompted to change the region code of the DVD optical drive.
