Study skills workshops are group sessions designed to assist students with a variety of topics including time management, test taking, using notes and textbooks effectively, writing and documentation workshops, stress management, and preparing for finals. These workshops will help you learn the study skills necessary to become a successful college student.

Yes!! We have two classes that can help you. TRST 102 STUDY SKILLS is dealing with the basic skills and techniques you need to succeed in college: time management tips, note taking, test taking skills, memory techniques, reading strategies, research methods, resource information and more. The TRST 103 LIFE TRANSITION & CAREER EXPLORATION class is extensive self assessment, developing transition skills, exploring career options and making better informed educational and career choices.

Study skills coaching sessions are individual appointments during which students have the opportunity to meet with a study skills coach to discuss methods to improve their study skills in a variety of different areas. Students who have general questions or prefer individual appointments as opposed to group workshops will find these sessions useful. These sessions can either be weekly meetings or scheduled on an “as needed” basis.

If you need help with class assignments and homework, The Learning Center and Writing Center (located in D-187) offers free Tutorial Assistance. The Self-Paced Courses (Open Entry/Exit) offer assistance in writing, studying, and communication skills.

The Technology Learning Centers provide assistance with operating systems, logins and passwords, Internet browsers and the Intranet, online course management tools, WebMail, WebAdvisor, and basic MacIntosh features. The TLC at Newtown is located on the 3rd floor of the library and in the libraries at the Upper County campus and the Bristol Center.

The Department of Education has developed test information guides for each of the tests. The guides provide a general overview of the test, including the competencies and skills to be tested and a few sample test items. See "Test Information Guides" for ordering information. The guides are not intended to replace course work. Examinees may locate reference materials for the test skills on the Internet, in libraries, and in college bookstores.

If you are having difficulties with any of your subjects you should discuss these with your tutor. If you would like additional programs to develop your language and study skills, the Faculty of Economics and Commerce Teaching and Learning Unit offer a number of programs which are very helpful. Students are also encouraged to discuss any problems with their Program Co-ordinator or staff in the Professional Programs Office.

Yes. The only teacher at my school who taught me study skills had all his students pass the exams each year. That made the other teachers respect him, but it didn't seem to occur to them that they could teach us study skills too!

We have two distinctly different programs. One teaches critical thinking, reading comprehension, vocabulary and organizing skills. It has been shown to decrease the fear of taking tests and dramatically increase test scores. The other study skills course teaches behavioral and practical skills for organizing the performance tasks of being in school. See the website for detailed information.

Thacher has an excellent system in place when students need extra help. First, we have a full-time study skills coordinator who meets individually with students to assess areas of difficulty and to come up with a plan to help the students better manage their workload. Sometimes this means learning better time-management; sometimes it means dropping down a level in a certain class; sometimes, it simply means spending more time with the books.

One of the best ways to improve your study skills is to enroll in Guidance 48, College Success Strategies. This class will help you learn various study skills and strategies for note taking, studying for tests, taking tests, setting goals, and managing time.
