Polyester is synthetic/man-made resin formed by the condensation of polyhydric alcohols (alcohols containing more than one hydroxyl group) with dibasic acids (acids containing two replaceable hydrogen atoms). Polyesters are thermosetting plastics, used in making synthetic fibers, such as Dacron and Terylene, and constructional plastics. The outstanding characteristics of polyesters is their ability to resist wrinkling and to spring back into shape when creased.

Polyester material is flame-retardant and will not support a flame if it is exposed to fire and will not melt on the wearer. Polyester no-see-um mesh is fine enough to keep even no-see-ums and ticks from biting the wearer but still allows air to move through the mesh so that it remains cool. Polyester pack cloth is a general term given to a variety of fabrics that fall within a given range of textures and weights. Generally, most pack cloths use between 400D and 600D yarns (see question "What is 1000D Cordura?") and are made from either nylon or polyester fibers. Pack cloth is almost always coated on the back with a water resistant coating that provides water resistance as well as structure to the fabric.

The sublimation ink bonds with polyester, but the garment doesn't have to be 100% polyester. We would recommend a high polyester component for best results. Sublimation t-shirts for example are cotton t-shirts with a microweave of polyester in the upper layer of the fabric to enable the inks to bond permanently and vibrantly.
