With the goal of replicating a first year associate's workload, we challenge each summer associate to accept a wide range of assignments. Typical responsibilities include: research and writing; attending trials, hearings, and depositions; participating in client meetings and strategy sessions; conducting due diligence; and, in some cases, directly handling client matters. Each summer associate will also tackle a pro bono client matter.

Our goal is to provide summer associates with real work similar to what they would receive as a first or second year associate. We also provide the summers a chance to get involved with out-of-office experiences including: board meetings, depositions, arbitrations, client meetings, and judicial proceedings.

Our summer program introduces summer associates to McDermott and the cities in which our offices are located. We provide summer associates the opportunity to meet attorneys in all departments through an array of social events. Some examples of events that have been held in our offices include the annual Summer Associate Retreat, baseball games, sailing, cooking classes, a night at the theatre, and scavenger hunts.

The type of projects you receive during the summer varies by office. In most offices, summer associates are given the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects from each department. In certain offices, you are assigned to a practice group. Your assignments may come from any of the Firmâ??s many practice groups which varies by office.

Summer associates, like our associates, enjoy the quality of life commensurate with the balance between personal and professional lives, as reflected by our more reasonable billing expectations.

Each Associate rater in the study is asked to complete the confidential Associate survey for the HR Participant. The survey will assess the HR Participant's work and functioning as an HR professional. The survey will also assess their perception of the HR function of the Participant's business. We will send surveys to Associate raters through email and they will complete the survey through a secure web-based instrument.

Our summer associate assignment process is flexible. Every effort is made to give summer associates work in practice areas that interest them - whether that involves sampling work from many practice areas or concentrating on a particular area. The process is coordinated by a group of attorneys who monitor all summer associate assignments to ensure that the appropriate workload mix and volume are achieved. Most assignments involve direct contact with a principal who is working on the matter.

Each project on which a summer associate works is evaluated by the attorney(s) who supervises the work. These evaluations are further reviewed by the Summer Associate Committee, Recruiting Chair and/or Attorney Recruiting and Development Staff which monitors the overall progress of the summer associate. There is a formal mid-summer review for each summer associate.

You'll play an important part in our transaction and litigation teams, participating at a level commensurate with your experience and abilities. We treat you like a full-time associate in terms of assignments. You'll gain exposure to many facets of a deal or case, contributing to client meetings and conference calls, and even traveling between international offices, if necessary.

Summer associates are expected to be in the office during regular business hours (typically 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Although there is a budget requirement for our attorneys, there is no set number of hours a summer associate is required to work or bill.

From the outset, you'll be doing work that is billable to clients - though, obviously at a junior level - as well as projects that are designed to develop your know-how and pro bono legal work.

Summer associates rotate through two of four departments (corporate, bankruptcy litigation and securities/real estate). We make every effort to accommodate summer associates' departmental requests and, if we are unable to give them both of their choices, we try to get them at least one or two assignments from the department they are unable to work in. Within each department, there is a partner mentor and a big brother or sister to offer guidance and assistance to the summer associates.

This summer our summer associates will be paid a weekly salary of $3,077. The salary is based on the first-year associate annual salary of $160,000.

Although we accept resumes year round, students seeking positions for the summer are encouraged to submit their resumes in August and September of the preceding year. Interviews are conducted primarily from September through November, and our goal is to have the summer class confirmed by December for the coming summer.

Historically, Brown Rudnick's summer associates have been based in our Boston office. We are growing our program and, in 2007, we plan to host summers in Boston and New York. In addition to "base camp," each summer associate is invited to participate in our rotation schedule ? an opportunity to visit and work out of the Boston, New York, Hartford and Providence offices.

Once you register for Summer Classes you need to come to the Financial Aid Office and fill out Summer Financial Aid Application in addition to your FAFSA. NO. The purpose of student employment is to provide meaningful work experience. Completing class assignments while working may interfere with this purpose and is not permissible.

What do you think? Do you really think you can be trusted to do critical work? We don't even know you! You don't learn anything in law school to help you do real work. All you learn is theory. Theory doesn't help the client fire its employees without paying them severance. Theory doesn't help the client continue to dump toxic waste in the drinking water. You have to learn these things. And the way you learn them is by sorting paper into boxes. We know what we're doing.

Yeah, your parents, your friends, and your plants. You mean a mentor? We don't do that. Lawyers work alone. It's a solitary profession. Needing a crutch is a sign of weakness. You have to walk on your own. You have a problem? Deal with it.

The firm looks at individual work product as well as personal characteristics shown by each summer associate over the course of the summer. Analytical ability, research and writing skills, motivation, initiative, judgment, interpersonal skills, integrity, and ability to work as a team player are among the factors considered in the evaluation process.

We always try to get our summer associates involved in our most interesting matters and give them a wide range of assignments. Summer associates conduct research, prepare legal memoranda, assist in the preparation of various pleadings and briefs and get involved in corporate transactional work. Whenever possible, we bring our summer associates to closings, court hearings, depositions and client meetings.

The size of the Summer Class is determined by the Hiring Partner and Department Managers. Sherman & Howard hires only as many Summer Associates as there are anticipated first-year Associate openings for the following fall so there is no competition within the Summer Associate Program for a limited number of positions. For each of the past several years, we have invited between five and seven Summer Associates to participate in our Program.

Both the Virginia and California offices of Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald offer summer associates compensation that is competitive with law firms in the Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco metropolitan areas. For the Summer of 2007, the weekly salary for second-year summer associates will be $2,400; for first-year summer associates, the weekly salary will be $2,200.

During our Summer Associate Program, you are exposed to the full range and diversity of an intellectual property law practice. The summer program stresses professionalism, training, and development. You receive real work assignments to augment the training programs you attend. In addition to professional responsibilities, sporting and cultural events provide you opportunities to interact socially with partners and associates and to get acquainted with the local area. The program is flexible, designed to reflect the varying interests and skills of our Summer Associates. Summer Associates have the opportunity to work with many different attorneys in many areas of the firm's practice.

KMFM prides itself on recruiting and training young lawyers from Los Angeles-area law schools such as USC, UCLA, Loyola and Southwestern. We often recruit Summer Associates from top out-of-area schools who are spending the summer in Southern California. KMFM has, in the past, had summer associates from as far away as Trinity University Law School in Ireland. Several Summer Associates have gone on to join the firm as full-time Associates upon admission to the Bar.
