The stock head unit (same for HK and non-HK cars) will play CDR but will not play MP3's. The factory changer (actaully Alpine) will also play CDR but not MP3. To play MP3 you have to either upgrade your changer or your head unit or both. Here's what you need to do.

Many factory head units these days have the ability to control a remotely mounted cd changer. Generally, the head will have a button labelled "CD" to switch sources to the external changer. In this mode either the radio preset buttons and/or the tuner up/down buttons will control which CD and/or track is playing. There is an adapter that exists, made by a company called "PIE", that is called the GM10-AUX adapter. It plugs in to the factory CD Changer cable, or if you do not have that, you can buy the cable "COR-HAR" from PIE. far as I have seen there is only a couple of options. The Ford Dealership will charge you dearly for a stereo repair and it will take a long time to get fixed as it goes out to Ford Electric Service. The next best thing is to go to a junkyard of Late Model dead Mustangs, or just late model junkyards. They will have your radio/amplifier for you. If you're getting a premium sound system, note that there are a large number of wires connecting the head-unit to the amplifier.

It is a tight fit, but two full DIN units can be installed in the radio area. The typical scenario is an aftermarket CD player installed below the factory radio/tape player. Mounting h/w plates are widely available that allow a full DIN with a 1/2 DIN location below it.

The ones that can control a CD changer are made by Panasonic for VW. The VW changer is also made by Panasonic for VW. The head unit will only control the VW changer -- it won't control other Panasonic changers. In other words, you are stuck with VWs changer.

No, normal CDs are CD-DA format; MP3s are in (yes!) MP3 format. Some new Discman-type players will play MP3s, but most don't like low-bitrate files. That means it will play audio CD-Rs (and even then you might expect hardware/media incompatibility due to different wavelengths used on DVD and CD media).
