Will the stock head unit or factory changer play CDR's and/or MP3's?

M 3 . M A D R U S S I A N . N E T
The stock head unit (same for HK and non-HK cars) will play CDR but will not play MP3's. The factory changer (actaully Alpine) will also play CDR but not MP3. To play MP3 you have to either upgrade your changer or your head unit or both. Here's what you need to do.

What kind of changer will work with my factory head unit?

Car Audio Components FAQ - WikiFAQ - Answers to Frequently A...
Many factory head units these days have the ability to control a remotely mounted cd changer. Generally, the head will have a button labelled "CD" to switch sources to the external changer. In this mode either the radio preset buttons and/or the tuner up/down buttons will control which CD and/or track is playing. Check your car's manual to make sure your head can control a changer and how the buttons work.

Audio 10.1.) Can I hook up an aftermarket CD Changer to my stock head unit?

Jake Latham's 1997 Z51 Corvette - C5 Frequently Asked Questi...
There is an adapter that exists, made by a company called "PIE", that is called the GM10-AUX adapter. It plugs in to the factory CD Changer cable, or if you do not have that, you can buy the cable "COR-HAR" from PIE. The GM10-AUX adapter provides RCA Pins that an aftermarket CD Changer can interface to. I found Logjam Electronics a good place to deal with for my parts.

b. What can I do if my factory head unit is broken?

MUSTANGS MAILING LIST FAQ: PART 3, Version 1.1
far as I have seen there is only a couple of options. The Ford Dealership will charge you dearly for a stereo repair and it will take a long time to get fixed as it goes out to Ford Electric Service. The next best thing is to go to a junkyard of Late Model dead Mustangs, or just late model junkyards. They will have your radio/amplifier for you. If you're getting a premium sound system, note that there are a large number of wires connecting the head-unit to the amplifier.

a. What will fit in the factory head unit location?

MUSTANGS MAILING LIST FAQ: PART 3, Version 1.1
It is a tight fit, but two full DIN units can be installed in the radio area. The typical scenario is an aftermarket CD player installed below the factory radio/tape player. Mounting h/w plates are widely available that allow a full DIN with a 1/2 DIN location below it.

Can I play MP3 encoded discs in my new aftermarket CD changer?

FAQ - SoundGate.com
Actually, yes there are certain aftermarket CD changers that can play MP3 encoded CDR's. Please check with your favorite manufacturer for details. No, unfortunately this cannot be done. CD changers and radios communicate with one another using a digital language - the same method used between a computer and printer, for instance. Digital languages are different from one another, and the languages cannot be mixed without using some type of translator.

Can I copy my MP3 files to a CDR disk and play them that way?

Xorys' MP3 FAQ
You can copy your MP3 files directly, without conversion, to a data CD, and that way you will get somewhere between 7 and 11 hours of music on a CD (depending on the bitrate of your MP3 files)... but you can't play such a CD in an audio CD player, however you can play it in a computer, using Winamp or whatever, and now a couple of different companies have come up with portable players to play such CDs - I just read a review of a new one, but I forget the name (sorry)..

My factory VW radio is CD changer ready. What unit other than the VW one can I use?

The ones that can control a CD changer are made by Panasonic for VW. The VW changer is also made by Panasonic for VW. The head unit will only control the VW changer -- it won't control other Panasonic changers. In other words, you are stuck with VWs changer.

Can I play MP3 files on my stereo?

FAQ - CBSRMT Show of the Week - CBS Radio Mystery Theater - ...
No, normal CDs are CD-DA format; MP3s are in (yes!) MP3 format. Some new Discman-type players will play MP3s, but most don't like low-bitrate files. That means it will play audio CD-Rs (and even then you might expect hardware/media incompatibility due to different wavelengths used on DVD and CD media). Unless your unit specifically claims to play low-bitrate MP3 files you can assume it will not be able to play them at all. Consult your manual for specifics.

Can I post mp3's?

The FAQ for alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.gothic
No. Those should go to alt.binaries.gothic. This group is for pictures only. However, Quicktime, mpeg's and RealVideo files are fine. Sound files are prohibited, but video is fine. Please try to make it compatible on multiple operating systems. The reason mp3's had been forbidden was that they are sound files usually. I don't think a sound file can possibly be "gothic erotica" unless it's a recording of Robert Smith, Poppy Z.

What are MP3's?

Untitled Document
MP3's are a major breakthrough in music technology that has blown the music industry wide open. Before that, in order to put a song on a web page, you had to record it in what was called a wave file format. That sounded great, but a typical 4 minute song, in CD quality stereo could be as much as a 50 megabyte-file, which is huge by any standard. Even with a 56k modem and a typical phone line, that would take probably 45 minutes to an hour to download a single song. MP3 is a compression protocol.

Can I send a unit back to the factory for service or repairs?

Technical Support
Absolutely! Anyone can send equipment to Rane for repair work, maintenance or testing, so long as a return authorization (RA) number is obtained before the item is sent. Units shipped from outside the U.S. may incur exorbitant import duty and landing charges so we suggest non-U.S. customers contact their appropriate International Distributor. We quote estimates for non-warranty work only by model number, at the time the RA is given.

Can I use my stock Bose speakers with an aftermarket head unit?

Jake Latham's 1997 Z51 Corvette - C5 Frequently Asked Questi...
It is, however, a little tricky due to the oddball nature of the Bose speakers, and the way GM wires them from the factory. The 8" subs in your doors are separately amplified, and aftermarket units aren't expecting this goofy configuration when you install them, so they will not work unless you take special considerations.

They will work with any player that can play normal OTR rates like 32k/22kHz. The Volt seems to the the darling of the OTR community. Older players like the MpTrip require CD-style 44.1kHz sampling rates, so they choke on OTR. And of course they will play on any PC-based player like WinAmp. They will not, I promise you, play on your stereo: they are MP3 not audio CD.
