Digital radiography is a system where the x-ray image is stored not on film but as a matrix of numbers, each representing the amount of radiation reaching a detecting system. These systems use detectors that are more efficient than conventional film and this leads to a reduction in x-ray dose to the patient. Information captured in this manner can be stored and used in electronic systems such as computers.

The goal of exchanging clinical data and images over distance requires the implementation of digital radiography which will allow UFCD to do more and see more. With digital radiography we have the ability to create computer images with the ability to be enhanced and archived in one central place increasing access to images across the college.

Most individuals can have a radiographic or fluoroscope procedure. However, care must be considered for pregnant females. Women should always inform their doctor and radiologic technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant. It is very important that if you are pregnant or there is a possibility of pregnancy or breast feeding that you inform your physician and the center personnel prior to your X-ray procedure.

Answer: Radiography sources of considerable energy are used by contracted workers to estimate concrete thickness and safety for concrete drilling in University buildings. Part of the approval process is to ensure that everybody within the possible range of irradiated area is informed ahead of the scheduled irradiation.

Our certified radiologic technologist will prepare your x-ray images for the radiologist to evaluate. The radiologist will interpret your results and dictate a written report, which will be forwarded to your physician generally within 24 to 48 hours of completion of your procedure. The x-ray image of a part of the body is produced by allowing an x-ray beam to pass through this part. The body organ, being composed of different tissue elements having different thickness, density and atomic number, will absorb or attenuate the incident x-ray beam depending on which structure of the body it had passed through. The exiting x-ray beam is recorded on a photographic film similar to that used in daylight photography.

A barium enema is a radiology test to evaluate the large intestine (or "colon") for the presence of disease. A specially trained doctor known as a Radiologist performs this test in the Radiology department. The Radiologist carefully instills a contrast material (barium liquid) into the rectum, and uses a precisely measured low dose of radiation (fluoroscopy) to view the colon in real-time.

Eligible students who are not admitted will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which they were selected in the random lottery. The waiting list will expire on the first day of classes for the fall term. Students still seeking admission to the program must reapply in a subsequent term. Students who are not selected and have interests in other health care programs are encouraged to apply to those programs.

In addition to the admission requirements above, students from another Radiography program who desire to transfer to the OWC Radiography program must meet the following criteria for consideration of admission into the radiography program: Verification of good standing in previous radiography program, i.e., eligible for readmission to that program.

The radiography program is designed to be completed within six terms. The schedule of classes will vary according to the needs of the student. See an academic advisor for schedule planning.

The radiography courses include classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences. These are rigorous courses which require a substantial commitment from the student in order to be successful.

Applicants with a strong educational background, with superior grades in mathematics and science, are given preference. After a review of transcripts, top candidates are invited for an interview and required to attend an observation day at a local hospital. The interview and observation day represent an opportunity to get an overall picture of the candidate and to personally discuss the radiography profession.

X-ray is the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging used to diagnose conditions in the chest, bone, sinuses, skull, or spine. It is the fastest and easiest way for a physician to view and assess broken bones and can also be used to diagnose and monitor the progression of degenerative diseases. Unlike most forms of radiation, x-rays can pass through body tissue, making it possible to provide images of internal structures without performing surgery.

Currently, there are at least four FDA approved digital radiography sensors on the market in the United States, including Trophy, Regam, Gendex, and Schick.

If the only concern is porosity exposed on the surface of the casting, limits can be set for the maximum allowable size. However, if internal porosity is of concern, radiography is the only practical detection method.

Radiography students will spend approximately $450.00 for radiography textbooks throughtout the program. In addition to textbooks, students also need to purchase student uniforms which will cost about $200.00. Prior to starting clinical education, radiography students must have a medical examination performed by their personal physician along with up-to-date immunizations. This medical cost will vary.

The application process begins when the student submits a Department of Radiologic Sciences application form, which is available online. Steps to admission are also outlined online. Application deadline is May 15 of each year.

No one can be guaranteed admission into this program until the Admissions Committee has considered all of the applicants. However, your admission can be enhanced by completing the requirements for admission on time as well as making sure you have a good background in science and math, or that you have completed some or all of the non-radiographic courses. Applications are due by January 31st each year. Program interviews are in March, accepted students will be notified in April, and would begin the Radiography program in May.

The first step is to submit an application to Jackson Community College (this can be done on-line). Once accepted, you will want to have official transcripts from other colleges sent to Jackson Community College for evaluation. You are encouraged to contact a Jackson Community College Advisor who will assess what prerequisites courses you will need. Applications for the Radiography program must be turned in before January 31, along with a $40.00 application fee.

Completion of the Radiography Program at Jackson Community College would prepare you to sit for the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) board exam, which, if passed, would render you a RT (R). (Registered Technologist, Radiography) Most students work part-time while in the radiography program. The program does require approximately four (4) days per week of a student’s time on average, which makes it impossible to work full-time and be in the program.

Yes. Junior and senior college students transfer into the certificate program each year. Most, if not all, of the freshman courses taken at other institutions are transferable, which greatly reduces the course load during the first year. However, completion of non-radiographic courses at other institutions does not reduce the time necessary to complete the certificate program in radiography.
