ScriptServer provides full access to printer-based PostScript fonts. It also supports font downloading to printer RAM and to the printer's hard disk, if present. Permanently downloaded fonts are checked at queue startup, and only downloaded if not already present in the printer. Also, fonts can be downloaded on a job-specific basis using the PRELOAD parameter with the PRINT command.

ScriptServer gives you the freedom to choose your OpenVMS printers without having to worry about whether your printing software will support the particular capabilities of the printer. In addition, it lets you:

Choosing the fonts for a particular project can be a difficult process for many people. There are a few general rules that many designers and layout artists follow to make the process a little easier and more attractive. A more readable document will result from the use of traditional fonts such as: Times, Times Roman, Futura and Goudy. A serif font, like Times, is generally easier to read than one without serifs (sanserif), like Arial.

ScriptServer supports any printer based on the PostScript and PCL page description languages. Since the software automatically determines your printers' capabilities, such as page description language(s), color, duplexing, fonts, etc., you can be sure your users get the most of your printers with a minimum of configuration.

Embedding means that the fonts are contained within the file and do not need to be sent as separate files. This is done when the PDF is created.

ScriptServer software integrates seamlessly into the OpenVMS environment. The central component of ScriptServer is the symbiont, which acts as the 'processor' for an OpenVMS queue. The user interface, the SCRIPT facility, uses the same command qualifiers as the standard PRINT command, plus many more that access the enhanced functionality available to ScriptServer users.

ScriptServer gives you direct access to virtually any feature available on your printers, including duplexing, fonts, envelope feeders, and paper trays. Because ScriptServer uses a device control library that you can add your own commands to, you can extend and modify how the ScriptServer print symbiont accesses printer features.

One of ScriptServer's greatest strengths lies in its communications flexibility. You can connect to printers using the following types of connections: You can also perform output from ScriptServer to other print queues (using foreign queue support) and to OpenVMS directories (using repository queue support.)

Whenever a queue-specific problem occurs (such as a paper jam) it alerts the system administrator by generating an OPCOM message, and it sends both the OPCOM message and an alarm message to the Network Console. When a job-specific problem occurs (such as a PostScript error) the ScriptServer print symbiont generates a Print Log at end of the job that tells what error occured and when it was detected by the symbiont.

ZapfDingbats TrueType fonts can be configured to be substituted with one of the supported fonts or printed as graphics. To configure the TrueType font substitution: TrueType fonts that use the symbol character set such as "Wingdings" are automatically printed as graphics. Printing fonts as graphics can significantly increase the size of the PDF file, so this feature should be used with care. Downloadable Type 1 Postscript fonts are not currently supported. With ScriptServer software you can copy an OpenVMS file to a printer hard disk. You can also rename and delete files on the disk. Also, PostScript files can be executed and fonts can be downloaded to the hard disk so that they are permanently available.

ScriptServer allows you to select paper trays using the SHEET_SIZE parameter with the PRINT command. Using the SCRIPT facility, you can also associate paper sizes with OpenVMS form names, so that they can be accessed using the PRINT/FORM command.

Currently, PAPI only supports thread level measurements with kernel or bound threads. Each thread must manipulate and read its own counters. When a thread is created, it inherits no PAPI information from the calling thread. Support for this kind of functionality is being implemented.

the infrastructure level, the Handle System allows individual namespaces to be registered and later discovered by any application over the Internet. Namespaces registered under the Handle System are unique, and queries will always be directed to the responsible handle server for resolution. An LDAP server typically runs in isolation, with service referrals from one namespace to another performed at the peer level when available.

Quantity of requests. If there are typically more requests per unit time than a given server can handle, the load on that server can be reduced by spreading it across more servers at that particular site. If a site becomes overloaded, one or more "secondary" sites may be used to replicate the primary site and thus to offload it. Quantity of data: If a single namespace becomes too large to be housed on a single server, it can be distributed across multiple servers that make up a site.

ScriptServer software consists of the print symbiont, which handles communication with the printer, the SCRIPT facility, which provides the menu interface for faxing and ASCII translation, the EPS2FORM utility, which converts EPS files to PostScript Level 2 forms, a configuration utility, and the Network Console, which allows the management and monitoring of ScriptServer queues from a Windows 95 or Windows NT computer.

There are a variety of licensing options for ScriptServer software. The most frequently used is per-node licensing, in which a single OpenVMS computer is licensed for any number of ScriptServer print queues. If the computer is a member of a VMScluster, the entire cluster must be licensed, since all nodes in the cluster have access to the print queues throughout the cluster.

If neither your X server nor your X font server supports you can try one of the TruType font servers: xfstt (http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts/) or xfsft (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/ .

The best answer is not to have "all of these fonts". One of the greatest mistakes a beginning DTPer makes is to use 20 different fonts on one small publication. The best thing to do is keep to a smaller number of fonts that serve your needs best. Plus, PageMaker's performance decreases dramatically with respect to the number of fonts installed in your system. Most publications look best when you use only two or so typefaces. Simpler is usually better when it comes to typefaces.

We use web fonts for body text and for menus, because they are easier to read, can be updated in the CMS, and can be read by search engines. Traditionally web designers have used Arial and Verdana for body text. However there are much wider choices now, particularly if your target market uses Windows XP.

Most of the fonts I downloaded from various sites on the web. The rest came with programs or operating systems I've bought. A few have been sent to me by people who have invented scripts.

You can use the standard Windows fonts. In addition, Web4Print supports the use of SmartFonts which are high-quality fonts ideal for perfect typographical quality. SmartFonts produce perfectly spaced text and headlines.

FormSprint supports all HP-compatible printer fonts and contains the MICR and OCR A fonts. Other "soft fonts" can be accommodated based on individual customer requirements. Any PC GUI program can be used to design forms simply by printing the form to a file and uploading it to FormSprint. However, FormSprint is designed for maximum performance and flexibility in an System i production environment.

The fonts are not in the Generations program.? The Generations program uses TrueType fonts that are already available on your computer. Your friend has more fonts than you do on her computer (not in Generations). You can purchase additional fonts through an office supply store.
