A strong liberal arts focus is recommended on the undergraduate level-typically students obtain a degree in communication sciences and disorders. The School of Communication does not require students to have a single type of computer (i.e. PC or Mac). However, we do recommend that computers meet these minimum requirements.

Our students who finish their education with the M.A. typically enter employment in the private sector. Some of our recent graduates have begun work in the fields of human resources, public relations, and event management. Most of our Ph.D. graduates teach at colleges and universities.

The university requires a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale in which A=4.0) and combined Quantitative and Verbal GRE scores of no less than 1,000. In addition, each department sets its own standards, which tend to be more competitive.

The deadline for domestic students to fully complete their Graduate School application is not until mid-July. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Graduate School application must be completed before the admission process can be finalized. For International students, it is very important to remember that the Graduate School application itself must be submitted by February 1 or it cannot be considered for fall admission.

The GGCS requires that students demonstrate a high level of proficiency in five key areas: Theory, Computer Architecture, Programming Languages, Operating Systems and Mathematics. In most cases students do not need to delay their graduation in order to participate. MSU students can get full credit and maintain regular progress toward their degrees while studying abroad. Full academic credit for work successfully completed on MSU-sponsored programs is guaranteed. The options are many, varied and really interesting. Some information on how to apply to grad school, and the support that the School of Mathematics can provide, is being updated, for first time use in the Fall of 2002. Our majors can, and do, go into graduate school in Mathematics, Applied Math progams, Computer Science, Physics, Indstrial Engineering, and ACO programs around the country. Nationally, graduate student enrollments in many scientific and technical fields are low.

The University participates in a work study program and students have to investigate this through the Office of Financial Aid. There are various opportunities on campus for graduate assistantships that are non-teaching assistantships. The Program in Physical Therapy does offer graduate assistantships to students in their third year of study at this time. Once students are accepted they can also explore this possibility with various offices on campus.

Leave for Graduate Study - An employee who has served at least three (3) years may, upon written approval of the President, be granted a leave of absence for the purpose of pursuing graduate study for a period of either a year or a half-year. An employee applying for such leave may apply for leave without pay or leave at one-quarter pay for either period of time.
