NCDC we have installed the Atlas successfully onto a Windows 2000 pc. (We haven't tried it in Windows ME or Windows XP.) Here's how we made it work in Windows 2000: Please note that neither NCDC nor ESRI supports ArcExplorer in Windows 2000, or Windows ME, or Windows XP. Definitely go for Windows XP for the simple reason that it is designed for both the business & consumer thus is more adept at games playing.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP provide their own certified drivers for some EMU10kX-based audio cards. Our kX Audio Driver has not been certified by Microsoft (WHQL-ed) and thus a special installation procedure might be required. You have to boot from a bootable DOS floppy disk to run Partition Resizer under NT/2000/XP. In Windows XP you can create a bootable floppy disk from Windows Explorer by inserting the floppy in the drive, right-clicking the drive, selecting 'Format...' and checking the 'Create an MS-DOS startup disk' option. Then copy Partition Resizer in that disk and proceed as described in README.1ST.

Well, it seems I was mistaken in my original response to this question. Several WinME users have reported that they have no trouble running their older DOS games in this environment, though I still have yet to hear back from anyone running Win2K. Apparently WinME does provide enough DOS compatibility to be able to run these older games, though I'm currently not aware of what needs to be done (if anything) to get it working properly. Anyone care to enlighten me? =)

Use the default plug and play the Windows operating system installs. Not all CTX models will have specific drivers for these operating systems. Check the CTX driver list for your model at www.ctxtec.com.

Yes, the ASE2000 is supported on Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4/2000/XP. The ASE2000 application software is the same for all versions of Windows but the I/O driver for ASE I/O cards is different. Be sure to use the correct I/O driver files for the particular I/O card and Windows version. Windows XP is supplied with a range of themes that control the look and feel of the windows environment. Themes control the colours, backgrounds, how the windows and icons look and even the animation of menus. There are themes for Windows XP, and Windows 2000 referred to as Windows Classic, and your own customised theme.

None of the above software will be compatible with Windows NT. At this time there are no drivers available to make these software programs compatible with Windows NT. There is an update available for the Picture Navigator software to work with Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.jvcservice.com/custrel/download.htm. (When executing the update be sure to have Picture Navigator closed).

Answer: Due to Windows NT's lack (this also applies to Windows 2000 and Windows XP) of a native DOS mode, you may face many difficulties when trying to run a DOS game under any of these operating systems. Unfortunately the DOS emulation built into them does not fully replace "real" DOS and this results in games either not running at all or at least running with frequent crashes. There is no work-around for this problem at this time.
