Students can bring their own laptop/ /notebook PC with them and plug it into a connection in the school to gain access to the Internet. However, this connection is outside the school’s computer network, so the student needs to make sure that both a suitable firewall and up-to-date anti-virus software is installed on the computer. The school cannot accept any responsibility for any damage caused to a personal computer whilst using this connection.

You are allowed to use your laptop in the library, however no ports are provided for internet connection. The university is currently installing the infrastructure to facilitate wireless connectivity. You will be advised when this becomes available.

There are 2 connection methods: TCP/IP connection and RAPI connection. TCP/IP connection requires network card (PCMCI, Compact Flash etc) and knowledge of host IP address of your pocket/handheld PC. RAPI connection implies that you have Microsoft ActiveSync application installed on your desktop PC. Grab method is the screen capturing method to be used on your handheld computer.

Each room in the residence halls have access to the ethernet. The Library has more than 100 ethernet data jacks for you to access the Internet with portable laptops. The jacks marked with green tabs are ethernet lines for use by Notre Dame students, faculty and staff for access to the ND network. The jacks are located throughout the library. To use the jacks you must have ethernet on your laptop and a driver for your ethernet connection.

We have a dial-up system in my house and the smaller guest house, which is slow most of the time except in the middle of the night. So, if you want to use your own computer, it costs us about $1.00 a day for the connection.
