SAG-L's list server has built-in anti-spam code that it uses to communicate with other list servers around the world to detect and prevent spams. Other mechanisms are employed by the list server's host to detect and prevent spam from reach subscribers. But spams will occasionally get through to SAG-L, though. The SAG-L list has been set up to require a person to subscribe to the list before it will accept a posting from the person.

Firstly be diligent when issuing your e-mail address, check privacy policies before registering at websites, adopt a no e-mail address policy for incoming phone calls. Do not put your email address on warrantee cards as it may be a third party providing after sales. Have all email's scanned and filtered prior to delivery.

It can't. What it will do is prevent you from being bothered by it and as it removes spam from your inbox and preventing you from opening the email, spammers will stop sending as much junk.

Comment-Spam are comments added by unscrupulous individuals purely for the purpose of marketing their goods or services, or to annoy others. This practice is strongly discouraged by Faces.com! By giving out e-mail aliases instead of your real e-mail address, you can control who is allowed to send you mail, and as an added benefit, you can later see who shares your mail address with spammers (if this happens). Whenever you are asked for your e-mail address by someone you don't know yet, you can now make up a new alias address just for this new communication partner.

Be careful about who you disclose your e-mail address to. Be wary about disclosing your e-mail address on Web sites, in chat forums or in Internet discussion groups.

Also Networks takes the problem of spam very seriously. In addition to a virus scanner that is automatically updated once per hour, Also Networks uses a combination of known spammer blacklists and SpamAssassin (see www.spamassassin.org for details) to prevent both incoming and outgoing spam. Be aware that if you are spamming, you're in violation of the terms of service agreement and you will be disconnected.

Prevention is the best way to avoid getting spam. The operating principle is to keep your email address as secret as possible. Treat it as you would your home address. Unless you sign up for an email address that was used by someone else at one point, or use a common address like "smith@tribcsp.com," your address is completely unknown until you give it out. tribcsp.com/Casper Star-Tribune/Lee Enterprises never sells or otherwise distributes customer information, including email addresses.

Never open unexpected attachments. Even if you appear to know the sender, it is always safer to delete the attachment and then e-mail the sender to confirm that s/he did, in fact, forward you a file. If yes, s/he can resend you the attachment.

SPF (http://spf.pobox.com)antispam system is based on TXT records. Simply go to your preferences page to activate TXT records for your zones.

DomainKeys (http://antispam.yahoo.com/domainkeys) antispam system is based on TXT records named "_domainkey". Simply go to your preferences page to activate TXT records for your zones, and create a new one called "_domainkey" matching your needs.

Spam is a growing problem for just about everyone connected to the Internet. Consider writing your congressperson about it (seriously), in support of meaningful and well-considered legislation. Our lawmakers are certainly being lobbied hard by those who want to continue producing spam, but anti-spam legislative action is starting to pick up steam at both the state and national levels.

Web-ster provides spam filtering built-in to the email server. You can set the filtering levels according to the amount of protection you want. Every spam mail reported using the SpamRank TM system receives a unique signature and every mail, which arrives to your mailbox, is compared with this signature stored in the database for spam. If the signature matches, then the mail is moved to the 'Spam' Folder.

However, there are programs available that allow you to filter your email so that most unwanted email can be discarded before it reaches your inbox. SpamAssassin identifies spam by using lists of known spam servers and analysing the email message, and then handles it as follows: If SpamAssassin has ascertained that it is a spam message, the message is rejected. Add the sender to your whitelist. In ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs, add the following: whitelist_from mailinglist@example.com Where mailinglist@example.com is the From: address for the mailinglist. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) utilize various methods to prevent unsolicited commercial e-mail (Junk mail or spam) from being delivered to users' mailboxes. Some of these methods may mistakenly classify AlertSF alerts as such and not deliver the alert to the recipient. Each ISP has different set of steps to follow to assure these alerts get delivered directly to the users' mailboxes. Typically the sender's domain name must be added to an address book or 'safe list'.

The term 'SPAM' covers such a broad spectrum of SMTP mail 'attacks' that there is no easy solution to the prevention of 'SPAM'. The MTA provides rudimentary capabilities to deal with 2 types of 'attack'. These are messages sent to your SMTP server from an outside source that are not destined for a local recipient, but are for another external SMTP address. This results in your SMTP server 'relaying' the message onto the external destination.
