Most forms of digital TV are only digital between the point at which they leave the content provider and the point at which they arrive at your set-top box. Either side of that they are analogue. HDTV is digital the whole way. HDTV is also higher resolution that other forms of digital TV.

As such, the sharpness, contrast, and brightness controls are usually set way too high for the best possible and natural picture in your home. Most likely you will want to buy a new TV set to get Digital TV and you will have to buy one in order to see HDTV. At the very least, there will be inexpensive set-top boxes coming out soon that will convert the Digital TV signals so they can be viewed on a conventional TV set but it won???t be High Definition TV and it won???t have the new wider screen. Right now, most DTV sets capable of receiving HDTV are expensive.

Yes you may! In fact there are two ways to do so. One is what we call “viewing points” and means to have an additional cable run from the DSD receiver to each additional TV. the time of this writing DVB support is a very new and experimental feature in xine. The number of supported cards is pretty limited at the moment. See doc/README.dvb (in the xine-lib tarball) for details.

Broadcast DTV and DBS use digital transmission, and the quality of the two should be very similar. However, DTV uses the ATSC format (which brings you HDTV, multicasting, datacasting, and other ancillary services). Another key difference is that terrestrial broadcast DTV will be over-the-air, and is free to all viewers, whereas DBS is a pay subscription service.

The receiver will have an HDMI connector (High Definition Multimedia Interface) as its primary means of connecting to an HD display. HDMI can also be connected to DVI equipped displays using a suitable adapter cable. Most HDTV content will be protected by HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). This means most HDTV content will only be able to be viewed on display devices that have HDCP software built into them.

HTDV is not supported by DVD, but the designers have it in mind. Since HDTV uses MPEG-2 it will be easy to "upgrade" the DVD format. Cox HDTV refers to a type of digital cable that is at a higher-resolution than Cox Digital Cable. In order to receive Cox HDTV, a “HDTV-capable” television set and a Cox Compatible High-Definition Tuner will be required.
