Distance Learning (DL), also known as Distance Education (DE), is simply learning from a distance, usually from home, or from a conveniently located off-campus site. DL allows adults to earn college credits, even entire degrees, without ever leaving home.

Students use distance learning to take high school, college, technical, or vocational courses. Students learn at a distance using combinations of textbooks, lessons, workbooks, video and audio tapes, computer conferencing, and course information delivered by CD-ROM, the Internet, satellite TV, cable TV and E-mail. They may take a single course or many courses to complete a degree program. Most programs require no physical attendance at the school's campus.

Mount Saint Vincent University's distance students can be found around the world. They live and work throughout Canada and the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia. Distance Learning classes fill fast--the earlier you register, the better your odds of getting in a desired course. If you find that the course is full you can contact the instructor to ask for an overload. Due to the substantial time demands placed on instructors who teach on-line, most instructors are reluctant to grant overloads. Drop/Adds are particularly frequent during the week prior to the start of classes and during the first week of classes.

Each student or prospective student should take the Orientation for Online Students. At the end of the Orientation is a Quiz. After submitting your quiz you will get a response via email from the Office of Distance Learning. Keep this email (your instructor may require it as proof that you are ready to take the class).

We recommend you search for a program that has extensive distance learning experience, regional accreditation, low student attrition, a dedicated and highly respected full-time faculty, high student satisfaction, and minimal or no travel required. Yes, many of our courses are online, and they do not require you to come to the campus. The introductory level classes in bioinformatics and medical informatics, the Certificate programs and the Professional MS are all distance learning classes or programs that are supported by the Stanford Center for Professional Development. Online Learning is an evolution of what was formerly known at BCCC as Distance Learning. Interactive Video classes occur at a scheduled time and they do take place in a classroom. The instructor is present in one classroom, but is also connected to other, remote classrooms through two-way video and audio technology. If you are in an Interactive Video class, you may be in the same room with the instructor, or you may be at another site, communicating with the instructor and other remote classmates through TV monitors and microphones.
