The primary cause of this decay is a chemical process called binder hydrolysis. In this process moisture, usually absorbed from the surrounding air, interacts with and breaks down molecules in the recording and backing layers of the tape. The severity and speed of the decay is determined by temperature and relative humidity (RH).

The tapes are shrink wrapped together for shipping. This eliminates damage. Individual tapes can be shrink wrapped at no charge by simply asking for it. We do not shrink wrap, unless requested, simply because the material is not environmentally friendly. Indeed, duplicators must be instructed not to shrink wrap and there is no cost break by not wrapping. It's all about our planet. However, people are different. Some people may notice changes in the first few days, others may take longer.

No, we have not reproduced any videos except the edited versions for the television. Although we have had many requests for videos, we currently only have audio cassettes available.

There are lots of different types of plastic, and although they could potentially be recycled there isn't anywhere locally that we take them to be recycled. If we transported them over long distances we would lose the environmental benefits of recycling due to the air pollution from the vehicles. So this is why we only take plastic bottles. Even the lids from the bottles are made from types of plastic we can't recycle locally.

Although tetra pack cartons could potentially be recycled, they have to be sent to a factory in Scotland as this is the only place that can recycle them. This is because I live in Canada where most packages coming into the country are opened and video tapes especially are! (Customs agents are looking for porn.) When they open these packages they read everything in it (even if it's in a sealed envelope inside the package) which results in them reading your order which I don't want them to see. While it is true that a lot of old tapes are deteriorating, much of the panic about making copies immediately is marketing hype: someone wants you to spend a lot of money right now! If your tape is 20 years old and still plays, it will probably play next year. This doesn't mean that you should do nothing! Tapes do deteriorate. At the very least, you should have some of your tapes tested to determine their condition. Also make sure that your tapes are in a good, stable environment.
