On Mac OS X, all users have real-time privileges. No special tuning is required for real-time scheduling. But, OS X lacks POSIX support for locking pages into real memory. JACK will run without locking memory, but users should avoid running too many other applications when performing critical real-time tasks. If there is too much memory contention, the operating system might page out data needed for the time-critical process cycle, causing dropouts.

It is too early to say. We intend to make a version of Kaleidoscope for Mac OS X. However, unlike applications which can be Carbonized, low level hacks like Kaleidoscope need to be completely rewritten for Mac OS X.

Sort-of. Doing so will likely violate The Mac OS X End User License. QEMU does not emulate X86 Mac hardware, however some people have reported success hacking OS X to run on regular PC hardware (ie. qemu).

the time of this writing, it doesn't completely work yet. Darwin/PPC does work. Note that this has the same legal issues as X86 OS X.

Alternatively Parallels is the mainstream proprietary software. Also works well, although is a RAM hog, especially with two guests. You can try the PDtweaker module for Unsanity's Application Enhancer to make it work smoother. I couldn't make APE work on 10.4.7 though.

The Mac OS X installer is asking for a username and password for an account on that computer that has administrator access. This proves that you have permission to install the software on that computer. This account is usually the account you use to log into that computer. If your computer is set up to log into an account automatically, you will need to know that password.

The keyboard locale may change after sending a message based on the capabilites of the font being used. If the message font that you are using does not natively support the active keyboard locale, the keyboard locale will reset to the default locale for the font. The solution to the locale changing when you send a message is to select a different message font that supports the keyboard locale that you are using.

The Inform compiler for OS X must be run through the Unix Terminal utility. If you double-click on its icon from a Finder window, nothing much happens: a Terminal window opens and runs the compiler without parameters, which triggers a "basic usage" message and ends up by stating that no compilation was requested. The compiler needs to be told which file to compile, and we must oblige by explicitely typing it. There are two ways to approach this problem.

Yes, on Mac OS X 10.4.2, using fink versions of libtool 1.5.10, autoconf 2.59, and automake 1.9.4, Daniel Rogers has managed to compile Dia 0.94 under Mac. See this mail. It has not been reported to compile with any non-X port of Gtk2.

If you find yourself unable to use Inkscape functions that require the ALT key (such as Node Sculpting) you will need to turn off the "Emulate three button mouse" under the Input Preferences for X11. If your locale charset is not UTF-8, then you need to have this environment variable set: $ G_BROKEN_FILENAMES=1 $ export G_BROKEN_FILENAMES This is necessary for Glib filename conversion from the locale charset to UTF-8 (used in SVG) and back to work. When an application is installed on OS X, prior to 10.4, it is usually "prebound" to speed up launching the application. (That's what the "Optimizing" phase of installation is.) Fink normally performs prebinding automatically when you install a package.

Mac OS X's Terminal maps Page Up and Down key to scroll the session but doesn't pass that key to the application. Also Apple's laptops don't even have a Page Up and Down keys at all. To get around this problem Zinc maps Control-W and Q keys as Page Up and Page Down respectively.

Microsoft Excel for Mac OS X is not currently supported. However, support is planned for the next release. SQL Converter 2 for Excel does work under Apple's Boot Camp, provided that you have a copy of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

We've tested it successfully on OS X 10.3 and 10.4 with GCC 3.3 from Xcode 1.1 and GCC 3.3 or 4.0 from Xcode 2.3, respectively. We test with MySQL from the Fink project; we've used 4.1 successfully in the past, but now test with 5.0. You need to give the "--with-mysql=/sw" flag to the configure script so that it will find the MySQL headers and libraries. It's probably possible to get it to work on any Mac OS X version with GCC 3.x. We just don't happen to have any systems older than 10.

The current version will not work on MAC OS X. Maybe at a later date, feel free to port it to objective C and make it work without running pygtk under X windows but otherwise there are no plans to port it in the near future (unfortunately) we want it running on OS X as well!

Yes, as long as you are running Gentoo Linux on PPC hardware, you can use Mac-on-Linux which allows you to run an instance of OS 9, OS X or Linux as a process on Linux. Simply emerge mol to install this package. MOL supports Mac OS 7.5.2 to 9.2.2, as well as any version of OS X. It can be run from a console framebuffer or run in a window on X. Note: To run MOL fullscreen, you'll need to compile MOL with the fbcon use flag enabled and run it in a console framebuffer.
