Poor AM radio reception is typically caused by the pre-amp not receiving power. Apparently the pre-amp is not required for good FM reception if they have fairly strong signals. The power to the pre-amp is sent through a black wire in the same sleeve as the power antenna. +12 volts should be applied to this wire whenever the radio is on. Most radios have a "Power Antenna" wire that should work for this function.

OSHA has issued a letter of principal acceptance of this type of protection, on the condition that the noise level produced by the FM radio does not exceed 85 dB. Read the OSHA letter.

Rhombics are ungainly to move, but Yagis and dipoles are small enough to point right at the station. With the dipole, to tune in a station to the East, run the antenna North-South. Yes and I would never hike without it. It's another one of those personal decisions that everyone makes for themselves. I'm a current events junkie so I loved keeping up with the news each day and of course, the weather. I probably listened to it for a couple of hours each day at various intervals and like the TV at home, this radio had the potential of making me a "mind-numbed" robot if I'd kept it on all the time.

Well for one, we have enormous objects that can block and reflect FM and TV radio waves. We call them mountains! The land in much of rural New England is very rocky and hilly. And as if that were not enough, radio stations tend to be located in or near the urban populations they are licensed to serve. If you live between them, in rural outlying areas, no station is near you and very few come from the same direction.

FM radio stations all transmit in a band between 88 megahertz (millions of cycles per second) and 108 megahertz. The band is divided into 100 channels, each 200 kHz (0.2 MHz) wide. The center frequency is located at 1/2 the bandwidth of the FM Channel, or 100 kHz (0.1 MHz) up from the lower end of the channel. For example, the center frequency for Channel 201 (the first FM channel) is 88.0 MHz + 0.1 MHz = 88.1 MHz. So there can be a station at 88.1 megahertz, 88.3 megahertz, 88.

The radio receives 87.5MHz to 108.0MHz, in 0.1MHz steps. There are 32 spots for presets, and you can optionally name them. The user-interface is a bit confusing at first, but is easily learned. By pressing the play/pause button, you toggle between "presets mode" and "tuning mode". The slider left/right rocker action then can be used to move through your presets, or change the turning frequency.
