Fleas are a problem that should be taken seriously. These tiny parasites feed off of your pet, transmit tapeworms and irritate the skin. Carefully check your cat once a week for fleas and ticks. If there are fleas on your cat, there will be fleas in your house. You may need to use flea bombs or premise-control sprays, and treat all animals in your house. Make sure that any sprays, powders or shampoos you use are safe for cats and that all products are compatible if used together.

Daily inspections of your dog for fleas and ticks during the warm seasons are important. There are several new methods of controlling flea infestations and tick control many of which offer very high levels of protection.

Fleas and ticks are not only a nuisance for your pet, but they can also be dangerous to their health. Ticks carry several types of diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Tularemia, all of which you can contract too. Fleas can also cause health problems in your pets such as skin allergies, internal parasites (tapeworms), anemia, and in cats they can spread 'cat scratch disease'.

Fleas and ticks are common parasites found on a cat or dog. If an animal is bitten by a tick that is carrying lymes disease, it can be a costly and painful recovery. (A lymes vaccination is the best way to help prevent lymes disease). Fleas can easily infest a household, and are a tough cycle to break. Therefore, it is important to prevent flea and tick infestation. FRONTLINE PLUS is available as a monthly topical application to prevent both flea and tick infestation.

In dogs, the duration of action of FRONTLINE® is 2 to 3 months against fleas and 1 month against ticks. In cats, its duration of action against fleas is 6 weeks.

Not all flea medications are equal. There are generally two types of flea medications: over the counter and prescription strength. The over the counter type can be purchased at most stores where pet supplies are sold. These products are not as strong, and therefore, not as effective as medications that can be purchased at a veterinary clinic. Also, the pet store brands can sometimes cause adverse reactions in cats such as tremors, salivation and seizures and in rare cases, death.

We are recommending that our cat owners use one of the topical flea preventatives: Advantage or Frontline, also known as TopSpot. Advantage kills fleas within 24 hours and continues to work for 4 weeks. (*The canine product, Advantix, is very toxic to cats.) Frontline for Cats kills ticks and fleas and is often used on the indoor-outdoor kitties. Both products are topical liquids, which are very safe and available from your Veterinarian. Again, never use products intended for dogs on your cat.

Arthropods play a significant role as vectors of many pathogenic microorganisms. Mosquito-borne, tick-borne and flea-borne diseases occur in Texas. Mosquito-borne diseases are encephalitides caused by West Nile virus (WNV), St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus, western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, and California encephalitis virus; Dengue fever; malaria; and Yellow fever.

Fleas and ticks have different life cycles than other targeted species. During certain phases of this life cycle they do not succumb to treatments, so we have to “catch” them between these dormant cycles in order to attain management. Two treatments are required for fleas and three treatments for ticks in order to gain control.

This depends on several factors. I would avoid over the counter medications, because most are pyrethrin based, which can be toxic for your pet, especially cats. Also, these pyrethrins are highly water-soluble and wash off of your pet easily. Lastly, they do not work long enough to help break the flea???s life cycle, which is what you need to help get rid of fleas. We have Sentinel (Program with Interceptor), Advantix, and Frontline for dogs and Frontline and Revolution for cats.

We maintain a strict regimen for pest control. Unfortunately, it is impossible to exterminate all fleas and ticks, especially because many grooming dogs arrive in need of flea baths. Effective June 1, 2006 all boarding dogs must have Frontline Plus or Advantix applied in our presence! If you've previously applied or you use a different brand, your dog will be given a Capstar tablet to immediately kill any fleas & will be examined for ticks. There is a $6.00 per dose charge for Capstar.

There is a seriously major problem with ticks and fleas here on the Costa Azahar. Their bites can cause major illness and even result in the death of a pet! Special collars which reduce the risk of bites from fleas and ticks should be purchased from the Vet and fitted to your dog at all times.

With the advancement of flea control like Program, Sentinel and Frontline, fleas and ticks are no longer the nuisance they once were for you and your pet. Frontline is a liquid applied to the back of the neck which kills fleas and ticks within 24 hours and continues killing them for 1 full month. Sentinel is a tablet that is given by mouth every month with a meal. It prevents heartworm disease, the most serious parasite affecting dogs, and stops fleas from reproducing, and also lasts a month.

This is an excellent question, because it asks about prevention rather than treatment. It is much easier to prevent than to treat, especially when talking about fleas! There are several good products out there for ticks. A topical once-a-month liquid seems to be the most effective thing for those (i.e. Advantix?, Frontline?, or Biospot?). These are also fairly effective for flea prevention.

CAH endorses and sells Frontline Plus for this purpose. It must be applied monthly, continuously year round, as ticks that carry Lyme Disease can be seen even in the winter. All pets should be tested annually. This is to prevent the presence of dangerous parasites within the pet as well as those that can be transmitted to humans from animals. This is especially true for small children & immuno compromised or older adults.

We recommend Advantage™. It's safe for cats, young puppies and kittens and pets with health problems and it works! If you have problems with ticks, we recommend Frontline™ or Top Spot™ for dogs, not for cats, as we've seen a few problems. These products are available only through your veterinarian and are a little expensive. However .

We offer many products for flea and tick prevention that are safe, affordable, and have easy applications. Frontline, Advantage, and Advantix are all topical products that can be applied directly to your pet’s skin monthly for prevention. All of these products are much safer than over the counter flea products. The topical products do seem to be the most helpful for those animals with flea allergies.

Get a proprietary flea treatment for your pet from a vet. Look for any signs of flea presence in the house (see Fleas).  Your house may need to be fumigated. It's possible, but if so you cannot remove them yourself as they are a protected species. Contact us for more advice.

Abigold makes every effort to keep the kennel and play yards free of fleas and ticks. Also, dogs can get tape worms from ingesting infected fleas. You should administer a topical treatment, such as Frontline Plus, a minimum of 48 hours prior to boarding your dog.

Fleas and ticks are not only an unpleasant nuisance---they can also pose a serious health threat for both you and your pet. Fleas can carry tapeworm larvae which, if ingested, can lead to tapeworm infestation in your pet. This can cause malnutrition and other health concerns for your cat or dog.
