All new PDAs need to be fully charged before using. It is important to pay attention to the battery icon on your screen so you know when you'll soon need to charge (it's sort of like the gas guage in your car). If the battery in your handheld "dies," all data stored in memory is lost. However, performing another Hotsync operation once the battery is recharged restores information saved from the last HotSync operation.

As the battery weakens over time, the output level will reduce and become more distorted. When you hear that happening, it's time to change the battery. Why shouldn't I use a simple V-meter to indicate my battery status?

TBS Electronics - faq - Manufacturer of Inverters, Chargers ...
A simple volt-meter cannot reliably indicate the state-of-charge of the battery, because battery voltage is heavily dependent on the discharge- or charging-current. Besides this, deep-cycle batteries should be charged when 45-55% of the stored energy is removed while a significant reduction of the battery voltage is seen when 85-100% of the energy is removed. So when using a simple volt-meter, your battery will continuously be discharged too deep, drastically reducing it's life time.
